Flash of Briliance or Flash of Crazy

Okay, this post may be a flash of brilliance or a flash of crazy…I’m not sure. I have a bag full of tiny balls and not so tiny sock leftovers after working mitre squares from my Sock Yarn Memory Blanket. Look at all that crazy color!

I’m also a subscriber to Mary of Kino Knits newsletter. And one of the perks is coupons and sometimes a free pattern. She recently launched the Daunt Cowl and it’s free to subscribers. It’s just so gorgeous!!

What would happen if I made a crazy scrappy Daunt?? I could maybe make a rainbow, or just work crazy random colors, or maybe a stay in a single color family? I wouldn’t necessarily have enough of any one scarp to complete a stripe as Mary shows. But who’s to say my stripes need to be equal? I have some neutral sock yarns in stash to work in between. This pattern is specifically designed to use up bits and pieces. I am REALLY feeling the siren’s call of this project. All I’m missing is short circumference size 4 needles….

I think I need to send the toddler on a play date and just spread all my leftovers on the floor and have a party!

Feeling Scrappy

My sock yarn memory blanket is officially square (ish) again.


I even spent an entire Jellybean nap and wove in more ends. I think I deserve a chocolate for that! This has just been very potato chippy for me lately. 

I think, purely arbitrarily, that I’m going to add another column instead of another row right now. I love this blanket so much that I don’t even care that it’s 70 degrees and I roast working on it. It’s my current zen knitting and I can’t put it down. Much to the suffering of my other WIPs!

A Question of Leftovers

I’m starting to get quite a stash of leftover sock yarn and worsted weight. None of it is enough to make much of a project in and of itself. So I’ve been toying with the idea of a leftover blanket. A nice mashup of my leftovers woven into a nice memory project. 

For my sock scraps I’ve always eyed the The Beekeepers Quilt by tiny owl knits. This project has the awesome portability and quick gratification of socks. But the offset is a TON of seaming at the end. There are also a ton of mitered square blankets on Ravelry that would eliminate seaming but the project would be much less portable over time. I just can’t decide!

And the worsted scraps also present a unique challenge. They are mostly acrylic from my early knits. My inner wild child says to just cast on a bunch of stitches and work a crazy garter stitch blanket with random scraps. It might be ugly but it would be my memories keeping me warm!

What are your thoughts on scrap patterns and uses?
