Family Photo Outtakes

We wanted a Christmas card photo this year for the first time since we got married. Well….the dogs were less than cooperative to say the least. But on the bright side I have a hilarious outtake to show you!!

Notice the people look fine, the dog on the left looks a bit intoxicated, and the dog on the right is very unimpressed. Thankfully the photographer got at least a couple good shots (but those are for Christmas presents so I can’t post yet)!

Happy Holidays!!!

Blessings of a Small Town

I grew up in a tiny farming community in rural north-central Kansas. Only about 300 people, about ten times as many cattle, and a consolidated school district with a couple other small towns. As as kid I knew all my neighbors by name. My grand parents lived just on the other side of town which was just a short bike ride away. I could ride my bike anywhere I wanted really. I graduated my senior year with almost the exact same kids I started Kindergarten with. I had two sets of uncles and aunts who lived in town so I had ready-made playmates with nine cousins.

I think a lot about where I grew up these day especially with our holiday visits back home. I live in a bustling state capital with every shop, restaurant, and service just a short drive away. We have live theater, movie theaters, museums, parks, swimming pools, and access to anything else you could think of that you don’t have in rural life. I love being near all those things. But I have no family where I live. The husband and I both have a 3 hour drive to get to our hometowns and our families.

Sometimes we miss:

– Being able to drop in my Grandma’s house whenever I want. Her door was always open!

– Home cooked meals enjoyed with extended family across a big dining room table

– Wide open spaces with lots of peace and quiet

– Seeing actual stars at night

– Getting waved at and waving at every passing car because it’s probably someone you know

– Neighbors helping out when someone passes or falls ill. No one gets left behind in a small town

– The grocery store where they still have carry out service to your car and help you put your groceries into your car

– The smell of fresh cut hay or grass (even though it makes me sneeze)

– Lazy weekends around the house with my parents

These are the things I am most thankful for. I have formed relationships with friends and family that will last a lifetime. Most of all I just love being able to slow down my life a little bit. I tend to run at full tilt, like all the time. Sometimes everyone needs to take a deep breath and enjoy what’s in front of you. Because it might not always stay that way. Because my parents were under the weather, I got a cozy one on one Thanksgiving with my Grandma. That is a memory I will always cherish. So today I will drink my coffee, help my mom clean the house, and just enjoy life before we have to return to the rat race Monday morning.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Weekend of Fun

This weekend has been interesting to say the least. We woke up to a washing machine that caused the sewer to back up into the house. We can run the sink and take short showers but not much else. Then my parents made a surprise visit just for the day. Then the husband and I took family photos with our dogs who were spectacularly uncooperative. And it was freaking cold!

So today is about knitting…

And dog snuggling, even after their performance yesterday…

And later I get to schlep my laundry across town to a friends house in order to have clean clothes. Great weekend…

A Very Special Labor Day Weekend

I grew up with the most amazing dad in the world. He is smart, compassionate, patient, and a great teacher. He has been a teacher since 1980 and a football coach since 1981 and all at one school. Hundreds of students and athletes have passed through his classroom and football field. There have been ups and downs, ahem, including my teenage years but he handled it all with class and patience.
I got a email a few months back that the football alumni and school board wanted to honor his 30 years of service and invited our family to help surprise him at the first home game of the season. So my mother, sister, the hubs, and I sneakily made plans to all attend the game. There were also 52 alumni football players in attendance and we were off to the races! The football team was led down the field by a group of Harley’s and got the crowd really fired up. Then each team took there warmups. Finally we got to the surprise, my family met the alumni at midfield and shocked the hell out of my dad. A heartfelt speak was written and read by my dad’s assistant coach of 28 years. Then the big reveal….
The school board named the field after him! Pike Valley football field is now Don Melby Field!

Dad was shocked to the point of tears. Such an amazing gift from a supportive community. I’d like to take a moment to explain why this is do special. Not only has father lived and taught in this community for 30 years, he also grew up there. He attended high school and won three back to back to back state football championships. He built a home right across the street from the field with his wife and raised two daughters here. So now every morning he can step onto the porch and see that sign. A testament to his hard work and dedication.
I cannot thank the players, families, boosters, and the community enough for this honor. It means the world to my dad and our family. Such a rare thing in this world today and it must be celebrated!
