Cast On: LSP Hat

I am really feeling the cast-on-itis around here. Especially with all the yummy yarn I picked up at SSK. I have given up the ghost and I now have multiple hats on the go. This latest hat is a new to me dyer, Republica Unicornia.

This is their Rambouillet Worsted in the LSP colorway. I don’t get the reference, but I’m sure the name is one. It’s a lovely neutral grey base with rainbow splatters and speckles. I think it will make a wonderful vanilla beanie where the yarn shines.

One hesitation is that I am working my standard “recipe” of 88 sts on US 8 needles. This worsted is very round and plump. The beginning fabric is very dense. But I am only three rows in and I need some more fabric before I can really tell if I like it.

Cast On: Another Royal Hat

The needles from my Classy Cashmere Hat are empty so I put some new yarn on them.

I had one last skein of Warmth Worsted from Treasure Goddess from a haul earlier this year. Not going to lie, it feels good to finish all the skeins from a package purchase. LIke a broken record, I am doing an 88 stitch hat on US 8s. I am forcing myself to work a 2×2 ribbed brim even though stockinette is faster.

I am running out of fun and punny types of names for this hat. So this one is going to be called “Another Royal Hat” because I do tend to be drawn to royal blue as a color story. I finally counted my ravelry pages and I have made 15 hats this year since January 1. I wouldn’t not have guessed that many!

Cast On: Sally Hat

Having two sets of decent hat needles has been handy to have multiple hats on the go that are in different stages. My next cast on is what I am calling my Sally Hat.

This is a skein of Start Worsted from Geektastic Fibers that I picked up at SSK. This is a self-striping skein but based on the first few rounds, the stripes are going to be very skinny. The color way is called “Sally” after the character in Nightmare Before Christmas movie. It’s has an eclectic mix of colors but should make a cool hat.

The ladies in the booth also talked me into a coordinating tie-on pom pom. This should make for spunky hat when all the pieces get together! Happy Knitting!!

Cast On: Classy Cashmere Hat

I had one other yarn grab from the “free to a good home” table at SSK. This was some Classic Yarns Cashloft Aran that I think came from across the pond. It’s gloriously soft for this type of yarn.

The yarn is a mix of extra fine merino, microfiber and cashmere. The label has microfiber spelled the British way so I am pretty confident I have some yarn that is well traveled. Even Duke approves…..or maybe he wants a walk.

My supplies have multiplied over the years. So much so that I found needles that I didn’t realize I owned. These are some 8 inch Dreamz in rose wood in US 8s. so I decided the color was kismet and I started yet another hat.

This is an Aran weight yarn so I went with 80 stiches on the US 8s. I have two 50 gram skeins so I hope I can finish out a hat. I really enjoy the feeling of this yarn passing through my fingers.

Now I need to go and walk the dog 🙂

Cast On: Sea Slug Hat

I dug out the Arroyo and got my next hat started after finishing the SSK Tweed Hat. This colorway is called Sea Slug so PB and I decided this should be called the Sea Slug Hat.

I’m sticking with the 112 stitch count and stockinette for the whole hat. I think the speckles are enough interest that plain knitting will show them off best. PB thinks this hat might need to be hers. But I hate to tell her that it’s gonna be big. I guess we can grow into it!

Cast On: Wool Tweed Beanie

My Frankenstein Hat is done so I grabbed the next skein in my bag of worsted skeins.

I am back on the broken record of a folded brim on a stockinette hat. This is some “free to a good home” yarn from SSK. It’s a Lion Brand Wool Ease Tweed and its a little thicker than my Malabrigo yarns so its a denser hat at the same stitch count and needle size. It’s also not as soft but should wear well.

School is back to business so I have a lot of car time again. So this knitting is mobile!

Cast On: Frankenstein #1

I finally cracked and started a Frankenstein hat with my worsted weight leftovers. For this version I picked all my pink/red yarns.

I am making Musselburgh style hat, I cast on using DPNs and then worked square increases out from the center. For no good reason, I started with my English Rose malabrigo and I will knit until it runs out. I am leaning towards to the grey after that followed by the burgundy.

I will knit the hat in a big tube and decrease at the other end to make a musselburgh ish hat will the two layers. My “use all the scraps’ brain is really happy with this. The hat may end up being super weird but it will keep a head warm!

Cast On: SSK Tweed Hat

The SSK retreat has this cool benefit that for a small donation or tip, they will wind yarn for you with some fancy equipment. I had a skein of what I thought was worsted in my knitting bag and I put into be wound.

When I got it back, I realized it was in fact NOT worsted and actually a sport weight from Red Door Fibers that I picked up from KITH KC 2024. I decided to roll with it. But that meant stopping and doing some calculations to adjust stitch count and needle size for this weight of yarn.

After some maths, I landed on 112 stitches on US 5s. Still thinking a stockinette folded brim followed by a vanilla beanie style. This hat is going decidedly slower with the smaller yarn and more stitches. I think this will migrate to being my work backpack knitting and therefore a slow and stead progress kind of project?

I have another skein of sport wound up in cake that needs knit up. So if this works, I will get that skein into my project queue.

Cast On: Medusa Hat

I decided to dust off my tennis shoes and explore downtown Nashville while at SSK. I walked around the campus of Vanderbuilt and explored Music Row.

I ended up on a rooftop bar with my newest cast on and an ice cold beer. An adorable young musician was playing acoustic guitar covers and some of his originals. I sat for an hour or so and enjoyed my beverage and got my new project started.

This is my last skein of Malabrigo from my Yarn Barn trip and I am making yet another Rachelle recipe hat. This is 88 stitches on US 8s. This version will have a folded stockinette brim. This color is called Medusa so I am super originally calling this my Medusa Hat.

Love the memories that will be attached to this one!

Cast On: Sunflower Hay

Following my Copperhead Hat finish I cast on another beanie. This time in Malabrigo Rios in the Hojas colorway.

Not to be stuck in a rut, but this is another 88 stitch beanie on US 8s. I am going back to my stockinette folded brim. This yarn is variegated and is flashing/pooling a little bit so I am intrigued to see how this comes out.

Bonus point, this hat really blended with the sunflowers in my friends yard. So I am thusly calling this my Sunflower Hat from now on. Summer demand it!
