Cast On: Christmas Musselburgh

My hat needles told me they were chilly after getting my first Musselburgh off of them. So I couldn’t let them get cold so I got a second hat cast on right away!

I went digging in my stash and found another skein of Moonstone Dyeworks kicking around. This time it is her Stellina Sock base in Christmas on Mars colorway. It’s a nice muted Christmas color with a TON of sparkle to it. I don’t get the sparkle to show up on camera very well.

I am making an adult large again, this time without the extra increases. I’m curious to see how this one differs from my first one. If its too small, then it can go in the gift pile or kid pile. I just finished the increase and its just stockinette for many many inches.

FO Friday: Musselburgh

Y’all, I made a beautiful thing! I am so happy with this hat that I can’t stop looking at it and petting it. My first Musselburgh is done, washed and photographed!

Yarn: Yak Sock in Hectate color by Moonstone Dyeworks

Needles: US 2s

I know I was working the instructions for the adult large but I do think I added like 10 extra increases to the stich count. That means I should have gone up a needle size. The fabric leans to the firmer side. But it’s a lovely super warm hat. And the subtle tonality of the browns and greys is gorgeous.

This hat isn’t necessarily long enough to cuff up but it fits just fine as a standard beanie. This is a keeper for my woolen drawer. Mother Nature here in Kansas is wildly swinging from negative temps to the high forties. So my need for a warm hat is variable, lol.

FO Friday: Goth Kitty Worsted Hat

I blinked and another hat fell off my needles! My Goth Kitty Worsted Hat is done, washed and photographed. It turned out pretty great in my opinion.

Pattern: None, my own 80 stitch vanilla beanie

Needles: US 8s

Yarn: Knit Picks Felici Worsted in the Goth Kitty colorway

I purposely ended with a complete striping sequence for not other reason than whimsy. I used all but 26 yards of this 218 yard skein. It is a decent sized that can roll the brim or be worn slouchy.

In my stash I have matching Knit Picks Felici sock yarn in this same color. So next up in my knitting plans is to knit up some vanilla socks to have a matched set. I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep the set or put in my gift box. The matchy matchy is just filling some sort of need in my crafting brain.

Cast On: Goth Kitty Worsted Hat

New Year and new cast on! I had some training this week so I decided that a basic beanie was the way to go. I grabbed the skein of Knit Picks Felici worsted, mostly because I required no winding, lol

I cast on 80 stitches on a US 8 needle. I worked 2×2 ribbing until it looked good. I didn’t really have a pattern in mind. The goal was to stay awake while listening to a four hour lecture. The good news is that four hours is enough time to get 60% of a hat done!

I think I need two more color stripes and then I can start the decreases! Happy Knitting!!

Musselburgh On The Road

My Musselburgh project hit the road this week. I have made some pretty decent progress in the hours and hours of stockinette this project calls for. Still doesn’t look very wintery here in Kansas but I love the project matches the landscape!

Based on the weight of my yarn cake, I think I might be halfway through my hat? I am just knitting stockinette until I have 10 grams of my skein left. It’s the perfect holiday project that doesn’t require any brain space!

FO Friday: Baby Blend Basic Hat

I completely forgot that I had a finished object kicking around here to show you! My Baby Blend Basic Hat pretty much fell off my needles and into my hat drawer!

Pattern: None, I just worked an 80 stitch beanie with a folded two layer brim

Yarn: The Shepherd’s Mill BAby Blend in color M196

Needles: US 7 and US 8

I got sooooo close to using the whole skein but alas I still had leftovers. I used 80 grams or just right at 176 yards of this DK weight skein. The hat was tight before washing and blocking but relaxed nicely and fits like a dream. The faux cashmere makes this feel like butter on my head.

I did find a dropped stitch after washing. After a few cuss words I simply used some of the leftovers and caught the stitch and secured it to the inside of the hat. I REALLY like how this hat turned out so this might also stay in my hat bin for awhile…..

Knitting With Handspun

A wise spinner told me that I shouldn’t wait to start knitting with my handspun. I should reap the benefits of my new found skill so matter how “good” I think my yarn is or isn’t. So I grabbed my recently finished teal skein and set to making a hat.

I cast on 72 stitches using a US 8 needles and started ribbing. I don’t have a plan or a pattern. I am just winging it and monitoring how much yarn I am using so that I leave enough for the crown decreases.

So far it is really neat seeing what the yarn is doing with the thick and thin bits. I can really see how that plays out in the stockinette section. I am pretty certain I will keep this hat in my hat collections because it is just too special.

Hospital Knitting Day Two

My Dad did really well with his procedure and he got to binge like ALL the football games in his hospital room. So on day two I plugged in my headphones with a podcast and cranked on my Musselburgh.

I am finally on to the main body of the hat and done with DPNs for now. I checked my gauge like the pattern said and my gauge is coming up tighter than the directions. I did some math and decided to fudge it rather than frog and cast on with bigger needles. I added some more increases to make sure the hat won’t be a head squeezer.

This is really nice zen kniting just going round and round. I think this could be a good purse or travel project. Not a lot of thinking but really satisfying to watch the hat come to life.

Cast On: Musselburgh

I decided I could no longer resist seeing all the beautiful Musselburgh hats all over Raverly, social media and podcasts and I needed one of my own! I wound up the skein of Yak Sock from Moonstone Dyeworks and cast on my first Musselburgh.

I must admit I had put this project off for awhile because I HATE fiddly cast-ons with DPNs. I am totally capable of doing them but I have a mental block with them. And my needles definitely slipped out of my first try because it is slick yarn on metal needles.

But now I am off to the races and knitting the prescribed amount so I can determine my gauge and stitch count. Happy Knitting!!

A Hat Is Forming Quickly

I blinked and a hat seems to be falling off of my needles! My Baby Blend Basic Hat it cruising towards completion.

I finished the brim in snap. I did end up working a turned brim and attached the cast on end to my live stitches after six inches of stockinette. Thus by the power of math I have a three inch brim!

I did go down a needle size to a US 7 to work the body of the hat. I felt like I wanted a denser and warmer fabric for the remainder of the hat. At this rate I should be ready for decreases in two more blinks!
