Fresh Air Spinning

We had a brief break in the oppressive 90/100 degree days here in Kansas and I took full advantage! After finishing the purple floof singles I pulled out the next fiber that I had on hand and headed for the patio. It’s a de-stashed braid of Spotted Circus. I don’t remember the fiber content (I’ll look it up in my notes in Ravelry here some time soon).

My sister has been visiting with her standard poodle Greer and I was mean and made the dogs play outside too. It’s shady on the patio and only 88 degrees with a nice breeze. I split this fiber roughly in half and my plan was to spin a two ply. The dogs divided all the sticks they could find into many pieces.

Did I weigh or measure the fiber? No! I’m winging it because that is all the brain cells I have. If I get any leftover fiber I will chain ply the remainder and make a little mini skein. Happy Spinning!!

I have a four ounces of fiber singles all spun on to a single bobbin, now what?!

This is a sparkly fiber that is a mix of merino, rambouillet and sparkle. I just spun this fiber short forward draw and kind of let it do what it wanted with minimal changing by me. So now do I wind off these singles and split into two bobbins? Do I chain ply everything back on itself?

My work world has been incredibly stressful this summer and I just took on a HUGE full time project on top of the two FTE’s worth of work I already do. So I am decisioned out!! I legitimately may roll dice to decide this one, lol!

Purple Floof

The spinning wheel and pretty floof is just WAY to attractive to puppies for me to have much spinning time. But I have made a little progress on my latest spinning project.

I have given up all plans on this. I am spinning all four ounces on to a single bobbin and will just wing it from there. This is Hipstrings fiber blend of Merino and Rambouillet so I am not sure I have any other braids that would blend content or color wise.

I am spinning for the pure zen of it….when I have time and the puppy won’t chew on my wheel, lol.

Full Protection Mode

My Ashford Kiwi 3 lives permanently in the our main living area. Which means it is VERY tempting for little fingers to poke, prod or peddle. So late last year I found an Ashford case on Ebay sale and I bought it. Now, I get what I paid for and it took months to get here but I’m over that now, lol.

It is lightly padded, has a nice carrying strap and zips up completely. No more tempting little fingers! It is less convenient to take out and put away when I get the whim to spin. But I feel like the reduced wear and tear will, over time, overtake that frustration.

So my wheel still lives in the main area but it is a lot more protected and contained. I guess I like containers for my stuff!! Happy Spinning!!

New Spinning Toys

With all my spinning mojo, I treated myself to some some toys. I hear on podcasts and see on blogs the hand spinner love Akerworks bobbins. They are 3D printed and pack flat for storage. So I did my research on the Akerworks site.

I picked up two bobbins that fit my Ashford Kiwi 3. I let them pick the designs for the end caps but I picked purple for Jellybean and teal/green for PB. I put the purple one on my wheel and tried a bit of fiber. It’s an understatement to say they spin VERY differently than my wooden bobbins. Definitely going to need some practice with these new toys!

The Second Bobbin For Socks

The first bobbin is complete for the sock spin I’m working on. Just last night I started putting fiber on the second bobbing.

The dominant colors in these chunks of fiber are pinks, purples and a some muddy browns. I still have to concentrate pretty hard on spinning fine so that my plies don’t get to fat. Once in awhile my mind drifts and the thickness starts to come back. It’s just my default I guess?

Now I just need more hours in the day so I have more time for crafting during accounting busy season!

Spinning For Socks

In some of my belated Christmas present, I had 4 ounces of fiber that was meant for socks. It was a nice blend of merino and tencel and I think I can make a 3-ply for some sock yarn. Really focusing on spinning as thin as I can so that my finished yarn is close to sock weight and I have enough for my big feet.

I have very carefully weighed out three matching lots of fiber. I kind of grouped the colors into similar families so each ply will be cohesive (ish) and I’ll get a nice marl in the finished yarn. My back has been acting up so spinning hasn’t been as comfortable as knitting. But slow and steady will win the race!

Blue and Gold Plying

The PV Rambouillet singles are ready for plying. I managed to get the last two ounces of fiber on the bobbin fairly quickly. They look fairly even and I’m hoping for a pretty decent amount of a 2-ply.

This fiber is marling up beautifully. There are places where the colors line up and places where opposites are matching. This should make a wonderful variegated yarn in the end.

Alma Mater Spinning

Started some new spinning this weekend. This is 4 ounces of 100% Rambouillet in the colors of my high school. My dad picked this out as part of my Christmas present and he happened to teach at that school for 40 years so I’m not surprised he gravitated to this color.

I split the braid in half and then striped each half into skinny sections. The first 2 ounces is already on the bobbin and I have the other 2 balled up. This is not spinning as thin as the Targhee did but that’s okay. I’m content to just go with the flow on this spin!

Fire And Targhee

My primary focus this past weekend was the Targhee spinning project. I am SOO close to finishing the singles on this one. The weather has turned back cold for this week so it’s back to fire spinning.

Only one more ounce and I can tee up for plying! My mojo has been ALL spinning lately and I’m not going to complain as its turning out some beautiful handspun. I should really start knitting with some of it, lol!
