Spun Through Twelve

I finally carved out time to work on my 2024 advent fiber. I am all the way through the first 12 fiber nubs.

These latest few days were a mix of pinks, whites and even some purples and teals. I am unsure how close my singles are to when they started. I should get a control card and take better notes. As opposed to just winging it like I do.

I am going to stop this bobbin here and then start the last 12 fiber nuggets on a second bobbin. I know all 24 will not fit on my standard bobbin.

I am currently torn. Do I chain ply these to make a hodge podge stripey yarn? Or do I spin the second bobbin and then ply them together to make a crazy barber pole? I can’t decide. I am tempted to do the chain ply. The barber pole might make a muddled yarn….

Dewberry Do-Over

I ripped out the original start of my Dewberry Hat and started over again on DPNs.

I intend to work this hat on US 10s but I don’t have any DPNs in that size so I am using my US 8s and hoping for the best. I am working to be as loose as I can manage to make the change in needles less obvious.

I am going to increase up until I have 72 stiches total and then put the project on circulars to work the remainder. I am using the M1L and M1R increases at end of each DPN for a box like increase section. And after all the messing around with this yarn….this is going to be a vanilla hat body with ribbed brim. I am encouraged to get these couple of hats behind me and move on to less vexing choices.

Trying Again

I got my Iris Hat up and going new needles!

I am on US 10s with 72 total stitches. I worked like a one inch folded brim and then the remainder of this yarn is going into the body of the hat. Trying to avoid yarn chicken. I have told myself to decide on the brim when I get to the end of the skein. That’s a future Rachelle problem…..

Cast On: Glazed Carrot Hat

I am gearing up for some travel and I needed a “safe” project to travel with. Something easy, on wooden needles and a project I wouldn’t mind if TSA made me pull the needles out.

I grabbed the skein of Malabrigo Worsted that I bought on my lunch walk. It’s a singles yarn, so no plies. It won’t be the hardest wearing hat but the softness is out of this world. It’s called Glazed Orange but my midwestern brain just reads “Blaze Orange” for hunting safety.

I pushed myself NOT to do a stockinette brim and work 2×2 rib for some variety. It’s my standard 88 stitch hat on US 8s. I will fold that 2×2 brim for extra warmth and for sure this one will go into my gift pile. Which is quite large by now!

Plying Deep & Meaningful

I knuckled under and spun my heart out. I finished the first bobbin of Deep and Meaningful and then this past weekend evening I watched a long movie and busted out the complete second bobbin.

I was so in the zone, I just crafted and no photos. In fact I was halfway through plying before I grabbed the photo of the two bobbins. It plied fairly well but I was right that my second bobbin was thicker and ran out sooner than my first bobbing. Too much time had passed and my ‘default’ spin has changed.

I’m not precious about my handspun so when I ran out of the first bobbing I just chain plied the rest of the singles at the end of the skein. I will either use it that way or break off the 3-ply from the 2-ply when I went to use it. I just couldn’t be bothered to change my bobbing for such a wee bit of yarn. Now this needs to rest and then a wash/whack.

Patio Spinning

I felt the urge to clear my wheel. I had half a bobbin of my Deep and Meaningful singles from early summer. PB wanted me to watch her play in the background so I pulled up a patio chair and spun while I watched an imaginary soccer game. She won, of course!

I still have a wee bit of this half of the braid and I can call this bobbin done. Using short forward draw this fiber is spinning fairly finely. I am hoping the lapse in time between the first part and this part isn’t too long so that my singles are different.

How can I invent more time in the day so I can do all the crafts at once?

Ply A Wee Bat

The wee little bat spun up super quickly!

All the singles fit nicely on a bobbin where I let them rest for 24 hours before plying. I was in a rush to get this finished so I could have a summer spin entry with the Two Ewes Podcast so I chain plied the singles.

This fiber was part of a free event so the BFL is not the best quality but the experience was worth it. The yarn (pre-washing) is pretty crunchy and rustic. And thanks to my impatience, the spinning is pretty thick to thin. I’ll be interested to see what happens after a soak and a whack!

Happy Spinning!!

Dogs Hate Spinning

I’m trying to work on my spinning for the Summer Spin In and Duke is really not interested in progress. He would prefer that my hands be for head scratches.

And I have managed a few singles on the bobbin of this fiber. It’s a merino/nylon blend from Fondant Fiber. It’s crazy soft and the jewel tones are really shining.

It does feel daunting to look at how much fiber is on the bobbin versus what is in my hand, lol.

Happy Spinning!!

Summer Spin In

The Two Ewes Fiber Adventures Podcast holds a summer spinning contest called the Summer Spin In. I participated last year and won a prize. So I decided to work on another spin this summer

This is also some fiber I bought from a de-stash last year from Jude formally of Stranded Dyeworks. I may see him in an upcoming event so I thought it was meaningful in a lot of ways.

I split this fiber down the middle into two 60 grams balls to spin a 2-ply. I am making progress on making finer and skinnier two-ply so why mess with progress? This merino is VERY soft so I am adding some twist to help with stability and potential pilling.

Happy Spinning!!

Plying Roses

More on the spinning marathon from last weekend. I started plying my Roses singles as the shadows started to get super long.

These singles plied fairly well. I did have some thin spots where I had to rejoin as I was plying. And FOR SURE there are some thick spots disburse in this yarn. But overall I was happy with the yarn that came out. It’s still unwashed so I have zero clue what it came out to. I really need to get to this weekend for the washing and whacking.

Oh, and I was TOTALLY right about the uneven bobbins. I had so much left on the second bobbin. I didn’t feel like messing around so I chain plied this last little bit to make a mini skein. Silver lining I guess?

Finished skeins next week! Happy Spinning!!
