Burgundy Decreases

The Better in Burgundy hat has reached the decrease stage.

When I am working my hat “recipe” I tend to use a star shaped decrease. For instance with 88 stitches I work in 10 stitch sections and the last one leaves me with 8 when I reach BOR. I then alternate stockinette rounds with decrease rounds until I get down to a handful stitches on the needles and then I decrease every row rapidly to finish.

It’s not perfect but it works for me and muggles don’t notice it’s not 100% symmetrical. It also helps that it require very little brain cells.

Grey Brim

It’s sports mom summer and now that its 80-90 degrees, I’m happy the golf course has cold beer. For this session, lessons are two hours. So great knitting time!

I had been thinking about my first prototype ponytail beanie for my friend. I decided I really wanted a second crack at it. So I pulled a skein of TreasureGoddess Yarns worsted in Ghost Ship and got started.

I am doing my 88 total stitches but I worked a stockinette folded brim. I am starting the main body and when I get to decreases I will decrease quickly and then do some ribbing to leave a stretchy opening for a messy bun.

Or at least that is the plan! Happy Knitting!!

FO Friday: Another Teal Beanie

Happy Friday and happy finished hat!! My Another Teal Beanie if off the needles.

Pattern: My own 88 stitch beanie “recipe:

Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in Cian

Needles: US 8s

For this version I worked a 2×2 brim that I knit and then folded over to join with the main body of the hat. Then just stockinette for days ending in star type decreases to close it up. I used approximately 162 yards or 77 grams.

I have all the hat mojo right now. I think I have decided to channel it into gift knits for my volleyball team later this year. Work now, gift later. I already have the next two hats in mind with the yarn wound!

Cast On: Better In Burgundy Hat

I have a hat FO to share later this week and in the meantime I am starting my next hat so my needles don’t get lonely.

This is more of the Malabrigo I grabbed at the Yarn Barn a couple months ago. This color is a deep burgundy that they name Purpuras. I am working on a my standard adult beanie so that means my normal recipe of 88 stitches.

I did decided to start with 2×2 rib and again fold it over. But I have to throw when I rib when I can flick when do stockinette. I’m thinking my next hat or two will have stockinette brims as I am so much faster when flicking. It’s just so satisfying how fast worsted weight goes!

Afternoon Field Day

Today brings you the afternoon (and sweaty) progress of my Another Teal Beanie.

I managed to get the 2×2 ribbing folded over and attached to the body hat. SOOO happy to be cruising in the stockinette section. I can flick this and it just goes so fast.

Many kids stopped to look at my knitting and ask if they could do it. But it was so humid and the yarn very “sticky” that I didn’t. Also, I would have ended up with 35 kids lined up. One older kid asked “what station” is this and I said “the mom taking a break section” and he snapped back “can I try it”. I said no and giggled profusely.

Just need to keep motoring along and I might have another finished hat this week! Happy Knitting!!

FO Friday: Ponytail Hat

The Ponytail Hat is done!!

Pattern: My own made hat (88 stitch count)

Yarn: TreasureGoddess Yarn Treasured Warmth Worsted in Gunpowder

Needles: US 8s

I ended up with 4 inches of ribbing to start and then 6 inches of hat body and finished with 1.5 inches of ponytail opening ribbing. I didn’t know how high or what part of her head that her ponytail would sit so I decided to leave an opening that flexible and could support a messy bun.

I did decrease down from the 88 stitches in the body to 72 for the ribbing and then took out a final 16 stiches in the second to last row to shrink down that opening. I think the hat fits and works quite well. I should have done more ribbing as I don’t think its long enough to fold and still accommodate any decent size of ponytail. Though not bad for my first try!

Surprise Finish: Nickie’s Hipster Beanie

Today I bring you a surprise FO! This is a beanie that I cranked out in a single day of remote trainings. It went so fast that I didn’t even bother with photos until it was done, lol.

Pattern: My own 88 stitch beanie “recipe”

Yarn: Potion Yarns Bombshell Worsted in Hipster colorway

Needles: US 8s

I think this hat will go to the same friend who is getting the Ponytail hat. I think she should have an option for a closed top when she isn’t worried about hat hair at work. This hat used 75% of the total skein which is roughly 166 yards. So it’s decent sized.

This yarn was nice to work with and I like how the pops of color stick out from the grey neutral of the main color. OH….and I finished the ponytail hat but I will show you all that tomorrow. I can’t quit hatting…..

Ponytail Hat Progress

The Ponytail hat is progressing nicely.

I decided on 4 inches of ribbing before starting the main body. The stockinette DEFINITELY flys faster than the ribbing. I still have to throw my ribbing where I can flick my stockinette. So I’m getting there but I just need more practice.

Cast On: Ponytail Hat

Awhile back, I agreed to make a ponytail hat for a friend. She does a ton of outdoor walking all year round and was interested in a ponytail hat.

I showed her some of my worsted single skeins and she picked this skein from Treasure Goddess yarn in the color Gunpowder. I asked if she identified with having an average or above average sized head. After she stopped laughing, she just said “I don’t know, regular?” So I started with my standard 88 stitch hat on US 8s.

I am working 2×2 ribbing for awhile. I think a brim that can be folded would be beneficial. Thinking perhaps 4 or 5 inches? And then I will start the body of the hat in stockinette. I haven’t decided how I want to address the pony tail opening….

Well, It’s A Hat

Well, the Teal Dreams hat is done and off the needles.

Pattern: My own 96 stitch “basic” beanie with folded stockinette brim

Needles: US 8s

Yarn: Lilliput Yarn Woof Worsted in the Tucker colorway

And now I present to you the glitch. When I was knitting together the folded brim, I developed a little pucker. My last few brims have been ribbed and easy to keep the edges aligned. I guess that is a little harder to keep track of in stockinette and I had more live stitches than cast on. Sigh

I didn’t notice this until I was three inches into the body of the hat. And I made the executive decision to just keep going. The hat will still stay on a head and keep it warm. It’s just not up to my exacting standards. This hat will live in the kid bin for school/sledding/etc.

I am going to start my next had to clear my palette of this oops! Happy Knitting!!
