FO Friday: Fluffy Sockhead Slouch

My Fluffy Sockhead slouch is done just in time for the temperatures to hit 70 degrees here in Kansas. Oh well, it’s super soft and a nice treat to tuck into my cedar chest!

Pattern: (Heavily Modified) Sockhead Slouch by Kelly McClure

Yarn: Apothefaery Fabrications Halo Brushed Suri and Middle of the Road Sock, held together

Needles: US 3 and US4

Mods: I used the basic stitch counts and decrease instructions, but otherwise I did my own thing with length of brim and length of slouch

I may have gone overboard after my too tight Everyday (Not So) Slouchy Beanie. This one is WAAY big on my head. It is a roomy fit for sure. It still is a functional and VERY warm hat. But I might have over corrected and gone too big. Nevertheless, I’m not ripping it out as I like the color blocking and it feels to good to empty a pair of needles.

This hat is for sure destined for the gift bin as the perfect head will present itself in the future. Maybe my next hat will be Goldilocks and fit JUST right?

Ready For The Fluffy Decreases

I have added the third and last color block in my Fluffy Sockhead Slouch hat and I’m ready to start the crown decreases! It really didn’t t take that long to finish the main portion of this hat after getting the latest color of suri alpaca yarn added. There is a big difference in color but I really like the contrast.

I’m loosely following the Sockhead Slouch pattern by Kelly McClure. I am not doing the full prescribed length of the pattern. I have been trying this hat on and I am shooting for a small amount of slouch instead of the prescribed extra slouch. The fabric is super super soft and this has been really zen knitting wise. The decreases really shouldn’t take that long and I’m excited to get another FO under my belt during this time of self isolation.

Cast On: Fluffy Sockhead Slouch

After last week’s less than spectacular execution of the Everyday Slouchy Beanie I decided to get right back on the horse. I had more than half the sock yarn plus the coordinating mini. but I have less than half of the suri alpaca laceweight. So I’m taking a gamble on another hat…

I used the coordinating (and darker) mini and cast on the brim. I upped my stitch count and left the needles the same so as to avoid my previous situation. I worked the brim for as long as I thought looked good and then added the main yarn for the body of hat. I think it’s almost fade mixed color block kind of strategy.

This is a very stretchy hat at this gauge and stitch count. So there’s no way this hat will be too small, in fact it might almost to big! D’oh!! But I have a coworker who might need a pandemic pick me up and she has glorious natural big hair that a large hat would be well suited for.

I am starting to play yarn chicken with the suri alpaca and I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish the hat. But I think I may use some of my other suri/silk yarn in my stash to continue the hat in a third fade color at the top. I might marinate on this one for a day or two.

FO Friday: Everyday (Not So) Slouchy Beanie

I have another FO this week! My Everyday Slouchy Beanie is complete and I’m now re-naming it Everyday (not so) Slouchy Beanie because gauge matters, for real.

Pattern: Everyday Sloubhy Beanie by Dragon Hoard Designs

Yarn: Apothefaery Fabrications Middle of the Road Sock and Halo Brushed Suri Alpaca

Needles: US 1 and US 4

Mods: Because of my gauge issues, I didn’t knit the full slouch so I could save some yarn for a second hat.

This hat fits my kids SUPER well. I can get it on my head but it’s REALLY tight. I blindly followed the pattern and made the medium size without checking gauge. Silver lining, the hat is very very warm. I’m not sure I’m going to trust my children with a hat made with indie dyed yarn. But I’m not sure I’m going to wear this either. So I am going to let this FO marinate in my cedar chest for the summer to see how I feel about it later.

The yarn is delightful! You can see the halo of the suri alpaca and the colors are very rich. I might have been drowning my canceled fiber show blue by popping over to Apothefaery Fabrications to buy more of her Halo Brushed Suri in some neutral colors. I want to try some more projects with this yarn!

Prism Progress

Hallelujah…I have finally reached the recommended four inches of 2×2 ribbing for my Prism Break Hat!

I’m loosely following the Sockhead Slouch by Kelly McClure. This has been my go-to conference call and zoom meeting knitting. I find that I can keep easy knitting in my lap and knit while I listen and it’s impossible for anyone to tell.

I’m just now starting the plain stockinette part of the hat. So just a ton of round and round for miles. And I’m not mad about it. It’s the perfect easy knitting in a fun yarn to make this time and please a little easier to handle.

Basic Failure

Well….I got kicked in the teeth by not swatching during what is a very stressful time. My Everyday Slouchy Beanie is TIGHT y’all. Like squeeze my brain out my ears tight.

I made enough fabric in the hat portion to try it on. I had been having a niggling feeling that brim was maybe tight after I had turned and joined the cast on edge. But I just kept knitting and damned if my instinct wasn’t correct.

Now, I have knit a TON of stitches into this thing. Andafter knitting both halves of the brim…I’m not ripping out floofy yarn for that many stitches! This hat will fit someone when I’m done. I might just have to be sad that it doesn’t fit me.

Note to self: Next time you are extraordinarily stressed….check yo gauge!

Turning The Brim

I’ve overcome my dropped stitch problems and busted through the entire brim! My Everyday Slouchy Beanie is soooo soft, I can help but stop and pet the fabric!

This is yarn I picked up from Winter Woolfest 2020 from Apothefaery Fibers. I’m holding brushed Suri alpaca and fingering weight sock yarn to make my fabric. It’s melted butter soft and doesn’t shed like mohair. And the best part is now I’m on to the bigger needles and the at is just FLYING!

Dropped Stitch Drama

I am cruising along through the brim of my Everyday Slouchy Beanie. This has been my Zoom meeting and assorted work from home conference call knitting that I keep in my lap. I looked down tonight after I had created about an inch of fabric throughout the day to discover a d*mn dropped stitch….

So I took a fortifying drink of chamomile tea and laddered back down in floofy suri alpaca lace weight held double with sock yarn. I didn’t feel like working the dropped stitch back up as it’s own column so I just worked a K2TOG with the stitch next to it. And then worked the single column of stitches all the way back up.

The fix was pretty seamless aside from you can see the decreased stitch. The floof of the suri silk really hides a on of sins. And now I’m back on track to almost be done with the brim. This hat has a folded double brim instead of ribbing. I am almost the point I can pick up my cast on edge and work into my live stiches.

WIP Wednesday: Prism Break Hat

It’s a dreary Wednesday here in Kansas. Mother Nature cannot pick a lane here lately. I have been able to both let my kids play outside without coats and then two days later sled with them in the front yard. The headaches are real yo!

But I digress, I am knitting on my Prism Break Hat during my many conference calls this week. I’m still in the eternity that is that is the ribbing on the sockhead slouch pattern. I am pretty pleased with my overall stitch count and how the yarn is striping around. It’s not a clean rainbow stripe as the rainbow section is kind of stacking on each other. But it is making a really interesting micro stripe.

This yarn and hat live in my desk at work. Most days I don’t touch it at all…hello end of year and impending financials audit. But it’s there and I know its waiting for me, which is all I really need. At the current pace this hat should be finished by 2022, lol.

Cast On: Prism Break Hat

I got the “new project itch” and cast on a single fingering weight hat. My theory is that this is good meeting and movie knitting that is not a sock. I mean I have like 10 WIPs going but none of them are a hat. Seems sound logic, right?

This is a skein of fingering weight sock yarn from the Wichita Woolery I snagged last year at Winter Woolfest. My mom and I just went to Woolfest 2020 here this past weekend. So it also felt right to start using last year’s haul, lol. This color is called Prism Break. It is a grey semi-solid solid yarn with a rainbow that micro stripes throughout.

I have established the ribbing portion and I’m satisfied with how the rainbow is looking. It is somewhere between planned pooling and regular striping. I was prepared to rip back to add or subtract stitches to make the rainbow look pleasing. It’s kind of nice that karma worked out for once. This project now lives in my desk at work for self-care and conference call needs.
