I did my best knit the 2×2 ribbing for so long it felt like forever. But I have it complete and folded over. My Another Royal Hat is ready for the main hat body knitting.
Duke is in rare form and has shredded his SECOND dog bed. So until he matures a little….no more beds. And all the fluff spread across the living room, that is tomorrow’s problem. I have knitting!!
I was having a bummer of a week at work, so I put on my tennis shoes and went for a walk on my break. My feet just so happened to take me past the yarn store and I decided I needed a dopamine hit.
I’m still all about the hats and I decided to try the singles that Malabrigo makes. It is still a worsted skein so my hat “recipe” should work. I had the yarn store wind the skein and I think this will be one of my first Pigskin Party 2024 KAL cast ons. It will qualify for extra points since it is a NFL team color!
My Frankenstein Hat is done so I grabbed the next skein in my bag of worsted skeins.
I am back on the broken record of a folded brim on a stockinette hat. This is some “free to a good home” yarn from SSK. It’s a Lion Brand Wool Ease Tweed and its a little thicker than my Malabrigo yarns so its a denser hat at the same stitch count and needle size. It’s also not as soft but should wear well.
School is back to business so I have a lot of car time again. So this knitting is mobile!
I played yarn chicken and lost with my Frankenstein Hat. My medusa color ran out just after I started my decreases. So I had to dig through my scraps but I managed to find something. You can see that little bit of purple/pink pop at the very end. I think it adds to the character.
Pattern: A Musselburgh variation with worsted yarn
Needles: US 8s
Yarn: A mix of scraps (malabrigo rios/potion yarns bombshell)
I really like the two lives that hat gives. The measuring and counting paid off and it folds exactly where I want. So there is a pink story on this side and a darker purple story on the other. Bonus, I used up every inch of my scraps and this hat ended up around 220 yards of yarn.
I will definitely be making more of these with my other scraps! Happy Knitting!!
Turns out I needed those leftovers from Medusa to make this hat complete.
I am trying to work smart on this one. I counted the number of rows from the end of the increases to the start of the burgundy. I will then work that same number of rows on the opposite end before starting the decreases. Hopefully this means I will have a hat that folds where I want it to.
Double thick worsted weight is going to make one warm hat. I just hope that I have enough yarn to finish…..
The pink is Malabrigo, the variegated is Potion Yarns and now the burgundy is Malabrigo again. I will need all of this burgundy and probably a wee bit of something else to top this off. I need to measure a finished hat to determine the height I need. I think I’ll put a stitch marker at “half” so I can do some easy maths and measuring.
It’s scorching summer here and we are winding down with swimming lessons for Jellybean. He’s in level 4 and crushing it. Meanwhile I am sweating through my business casual in the slim areas of shade. That water was way to tempting.
It’s been good for my Medusa Hat. I am through the body of this hat and put the DPNs in to start the decreases. I love love love these blips of color in this variegation. The fabric just looks so polished and purposeful.
We still have several lessons to do so I envision this hat coming off the needles this week. Happy Knitting!!
I finally cracked and started a Frankenstein hat with my worsted weight leftovers. For this version I picked all my pink/red yarns.
I am making Musselburgh style hat, I cast on using DPNs and then worked square increases out from the center. For no good reason, I started with my English Rose malabrigo and I will knit until it runs out. I am leaning towards to the grey after that followed by the burgundy.
I will knit the hat in a big tube and decrease at the other end to make a musselburgh ish hat will the two layers. My “use all the scraps’ brain is really happy with this. The hat may end up being super weird but it will keep a head warm!
Pattern: My own 88 sts “recipe” for a basic knit beanie with folded brim
Needles: US 8s
Yarn: Malabrigo Rios in the Hojas colorway
I used 80 grams of the skein and therefore eyeballed myself into using 5 more grams than the last hat. I really should never trust my eyes, lol. In the light of day you can really see the variation in this Malabrigo. I think it adds character!
Now back to the hat knitting and next week I will share some of my favorite parts of the SSK Retreat!
I held out as long as I can and the Sunflower Beanie has reached its decrease section.
Malabrigo Rios has a reputation for flashing and pooling. This skein definitely held that up. Last night was not great lighting but you can see the large amount of variation that exists in the fabric. I’m not mad at it, it adds character!
I just really enjoy how soft this yarn feels and warm the finished gauge feels. This is hat #5 so I am still making progress to my year end goals. Happy Knitting!!
