Clearing The Bobbins

I already plied my batt experiment and my long draw class and while I was looking for bobbins I found some singles from an abandoned spin.

This was some lamb I inherited in a de-stash. It was from a farm stand and very rustic. The staple was pretty long and I was fighting a lot of guard hairs. I really hated spinning it and gave away the rest of the fiber. But these singles were just sitting on a bobbin. So I chain plied them to get them done.

I had a lot more singles than I remembered so this ended up being fairly significant amount of finished yarn. With this one done I need to wash and whack all the plying I have done recently. Then I can turn these in for prizes maybe!

The Last Color (Hopefully)

Turns out I needed those leftovers from Medusa to make this hat complete.

I am trying to work smart on this one. I counted the number of rows from the end of the increases to the start of the burgundy. I will then work that same number of rows on the opposite end before starting the decreases. Hopefully this means I will have a hat that folds where I want it to.

Double thick worsted weight is going to make one warm hat. I just hope that I have enough yarn to finish…..

Woolen Spun Plying

I have been working on finishing up a ton of partially done spinning projects. I had a bobbin of singles from my long draw class with Maggie Casey. They were ROUGH but I decided they still deserved to be yarn.

I chain plied the singles into a yarn. I have zero clue if you are supposed to chain ply woolen sp111un yarn….but I did anyway. And I got some wonky results that resembled yarn. Very thick and thin all over. I have more plying to get done and then this skein will get a bath with all the others. I may have over spun it but a good bath might help.

Ply A Wee Bat

The wee little bat spun up super quickly!

All the singles fit nicely on a bobbin where I let them rest for 24 hours before plying. I was in a rush to get this finished so I could have a summer spin entry with the Two Ewes Podcast so I chain plied the singles.

This fiber was part of a free event so the BFL is not the best quality but the experience was worth it. The yarn (pre-washing) is pretty crunchy and rustic. And thanks to my impatience, the spinning is pretty thick to thin. I’ll be interested to see what happens after a soak and a whack!

This Brim Took Forever

After many many worsted weight hats, this sport weight hat seems like it takes forever! But my SSK Tweed Hat has reached the main hat body.

I’m using US 5 needles and for this gauge, 112 stitches. I really had zero interest in ribbing that many stitches so I worked in stockinette. It might be the same thing over and over again but I find it soothing. And I still have a bag full of yarn that wants to be more hats!

Side note, I asked my son to bring me my purse. He replied, “which one? Your regular purse or your knitting purse?”. I kinda love that he thinks my knitting bag is another purse!

Color Number Three

I have made it to the third color on my Frankenstein Hat.

The pink is Malabrigo, the variegated is Potion Yarns and now the burgundy is Malabrigo again. I will need all of this burgundy and probably a wee bit of something else to top this off. I need to measure a finished hat to determine the height I need. I think I’ll put a stitch marker at “half” so I can do some easy maths and measuring.

Spinning A Wee Bat

Summer is slipping away on me! I really wanted an entry to the Summer Spin In with the Two Ewes podcast so I grabbed a wee bat from my SSK haul and got started.

This is a wee 44 gram batt that I made myself on a drum carder at SSK. I made it using BFL in black and blue with some blue firestar blended in. It was not as hard as I thought it would be. Though I nicked my fingers on the blades, ouch.

This is pretty rustic BFL and spinning very thick and thin. I am just going to let the batt do what it wants. I will just chain ply whatever the result is. I highly doubt that I will knit anything close to skin with this. With the bite this has….it might be a weaving or decoration yarn?

But I do like how easy the batt is to spin with! I need to do more of this. Happy Spinning!!

Socks In A Stadium

I found this gem on my camera roll and realized I forgot to share! Earlier this month I took Jellybean to his first “real” concert at Arrowhead to see Morgan Wallen.

It was hot, it was loud and Jellybean was beaming the whole time. Meanwhile I was sweating from every pore and also singing at the top of my lungs. I warned Jellybean that we would have a lot of downtime so I brought my knitting.

I got a few rounds in on my Penguin Socks and took a photo commemorate. Morgan puts on a good show, lots of lazers, lots of fire and noise so loud my phone warned me it was unsafe. Jellybean and I will totally do that again….but maybe not for awhile. It was 1:30 am before we got to bed!

FO Friday: Medusa Hat

I made myself adult and I did finish my Medusa Hat!

Pattern: My Own basic beanie “recipe” with 88 sts

Needles: US 8s

Yarn: Malabrio Rios in Medusa

This hat used 71 grams of the 100 gram skein. This probably means that I could have made the hat body longer based on my prior hats. When I tried this on, it was a fitted beanie with zero slouch. Which is fine and just means the recipients are more limited. And the silver lining is that I will have plenty of leftovers to finish my Frankenstein hat, lol.

Summer Vibes

I should be finishing my Medusa Hat but I just wanted round and round for tonight’s hot swim. It was 98 degrees and I really wanted to be in that water…..

I was able to crank out the rest of the pink yarn and really get into the Potion Yarns leftovers.

It is becoming apparent that the three colors that I chose will not be enough to make full hat. I will need to find more leftovers. And honestly, I am thinking the purples of the Medusa would be a good fit. Of course that I means I do actually need to finish it.
