Stashbustin’ #5

I found a few skeins at the bottom of my stash that I procured at a garage sale. Mostly some Lion Brand Homespun, a skein of baby yarn, and a skein of sock yarn. It got me thinking of something that happened at my last fair.

I had the pleasure of meeting the director of the Topeka Crochet Guild at my last craft fair. She mentioned that they always take donations of yarn to make projects for local shelters and charities. So in the spirit of charity and needing to unclutter my life, here is what I’m donating!

The make hats, scarves, blankets, and much more for those in need! So I went through my bag of hand knits and found some of my first “projects”. Surely they will keep someone warm this winter even with uneven stitches and crazy yarn choices right?

I get the double whammy of the feeling of charity and the glow of reducing my yarn load! I think I might even join the guild, they even welcome us knitters! I’m always looking for new fiber friends 🙂

GASP…..THE HORROR……I RAN OUT OF YARN FOR MY PROJECT….

20130106-162811.jpg

It’s 110% my fault. In my zeal to destash and cast on a project, I didn’t stop to calculate yarn yardage. I just grabbed stash yarn and went to town. See that small bundle at the top? Ya…that’s what I have left. Luckily I was able to source the necessary two additional skeins I need from the Internet for my Waves and Ripples blanket.

I’m bummed a little. The pattern is easy to memorize and the yarn is yummy. I’m sad that I can’t keep knitting as this bulky project is flying off my needles! And how amazing is the zig zag and the cream/white contrast!? Sigh, now I have to wait for my Knit Picks box to here…guess I’ll have to cast on another stashbustin’ project. Stay tuned tomorrow!

Yarn Swift Victory!

20130106-161314.jpg

In an effort to cull my stash and destash in 2013 I have been going through my finished projects as well. I had a few baby snuggle/kick sacks that weren’t selling on etsy. (My shop is here)

I frogged three whole items because I felt the three skeins of Knit Picks Biggo were destined for more worthy projects. Stay tuned later this week to see what I decided to use this yarn for!

I got to use my new hand crafted yarn swift I received at Christmas! It’s butter soft and smooth = no yarn snags. But it is heavy enough that my yarn wonder can pull it itself. So you have to work (in my case) the yarn winder with right hand and the swift with my left. Takes a few tries to get coordinated but I managed to get the hang of it! Kind of like patting your head and rubbing your tummy, lol

I think my swift will be getting A LOT of use!! Now….just where to store it?

Handmade Beauty

Hello from the land of my in laws! It’s finally snowed in Kansas and we have started our Christmas travels. Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Feels good to have a couple days off of work and I packed a LARGE bag of knitting!

I have scarves:

Toasty fire:

What else do you need? Oh ya….my own handmade yarn swift!!!!!

20121221-102120.jpg

My father in law is a gifted wood worker (see this amazing motorcycle rocking horse)!

20121221-102251.jpg

Well he and my husband put their heads together and devised a version of a yarn swift any knitter would drool over! It spins easily and sanded to soft perfection so no nasty yarn snags.

20121221-102439.jpg

The pegs are adjustable to conform to any hank size. The “legs” have holes so I could mount to a stand or clamp to a table. I’m in love! It’s beautiful, thoughtful, and most assuredly to get a lot of use in my house. I’m a lucky lucky girl to have such talented and loving people in my life!!

T-minus 4 days to Christmas!

A Headband For Every Head

One of my favorite projects for winter is the Trinity Stitch Headband/Neckwarmer by Anglea Juergens.

(Ravelry link to my project here)

It’s so beautiful, yet a simple knit! I made like 10 of these things while watching the Olympics this summer. I had to even laminate the pattern page because it was getting so much use!

20121212-161836.jpg

I knit all mine using Serenity Chunky Weight by Premier Yarns. Yes yes….it’s acrylic. But it washes well (important when you sweat like I do scooping snow) and its oh so soft and squishy. Plus with my great coupons from Joanns it can be affordable.

I can whip several if these out on a lazy Sunday for my “gift” stash. All though truth be told I have several in my own hand knit pile so I can where whatever color suits my fancy that day! The author is a super duper knitter and was so lovely to deal with on the purchase. I highly recommend this pattern!

Happy Birthday To Me!

I finally snapped shots of my birthday presents/purchases! (Albeit with my iPhone and in not the best light, but I couldn’t wait to share my treasures!)

First up, some Berroco Vintage Chunky in a lovely hue of blue!

20121113-112318.jpg

This is ear marked for an Endless Circle Vest by Julie Farmer. Knit for me and only me!

Next I picked up some Berroco Vintage in a different shade blue and a great heather green!

20121113-112733.jpg

These are probably destined for sets of fingerless gloves and hats for yours truly or my sister who lives in blustery Colorado.

And last but not least, Berroco Vintage DK in a yummy fall orange color!

20121113-112939.jpg

Not sure what to make with this yarn, I just love the feel of it and the color is amazing. I am a horribly bad stasher!

You might notice that I purchased all Berroco? I knit my first sweater out of the Vintage DK and loved how it worked up, so I want to test out other yarn weights to see if I love them as much!

All in all it was a delightful 3-day birthday weekend with lots of yummy food and yarny goodness! Now back to the real world and my big kid job!

Up cycled Sweaters: To Be or Not To Be

Sometime last year I caught the bug of sweater recycling. I am not sure if I saw it in a blog or Pinterest but I thought it sounded really fun. You take thrift store sweater and frog the whole thing just for the yarn. So off I went to my local thrift store and less than $10 later I had a pile of sweaters! All you need is small sharp scissors and time on your hands. Some call it up cycling, recycling, or reclaiming a sweater.

Some times they turn out great! Here is a lovely wool blanket I made after up cycling a black wool sweater made if extra fine merino bulky wool. Ravelry link for project details.

20121106-105435.jpg

Sometimes the process doesn’t work so hot. Here is a orange cotton sweater from J Crew. The yarn came completely unplied as I frogged it. The seams were so tiny that I ended up snipping bits of the knitting creating lots of short strings instead if one long string.

20121106-105719.jpg

The yarn was a complete loss. But I prefer to look at the bright side. Deconstructing a sweater has taught me a lot about how sweaters are put together and how patterns work. Even though the yarn can’t be saved there is satisfaction in learning. You can tell a lot about quality by how a sweater is made. I have found that a pretty appearance does not always mean quality. And perhaps a bit of the glee is just due to the destruction itself, hehehehe.

20121106-105958.jpg

It’s a very messy process that takes anywhere from minutes to hours. Sometimes you get a pile of crap but sometimes you get wonderful skeins of cheap quality yarn. I love love my soft wool blanket. And you get to learn something while causing absolute destruction!! The key is to pick a quality made garment made of natural fibers and without too many surged seams.

I have a couple more sweaters in my stash to tear apart. I hope to find some good yarn so I can show you what happens after the destruction!!

Happy Knitting!
