Sweater 911

I got a call a few weeks ago from my Aunt Barb. She was packing up her summer clothes and found a summer knit/crochet shell that needed a little TLC. So she packed it off to me via USPS.

When I got the garment I could see that the sleeves were pulling away from the arm holes. I stared and looked and studied and turned the piece over and over again. For one, I couldn’t decide if it was knit or crochet! For two the pattern was complicated and there was definitely no way to frog it, re work it, and piece it back together without a pattern. And there was no pattern because this was a store bought garment.

So I surrendered and took it to the Yarn Barn in Lawrence, Ks. Even though I live in the Capitol city of Kansas…there are NO quality yarn/wool shops!! I have to drive to Manhattan or Lawrence good yarn or good advice! But that’s a rant for another time. The kind ladies at the shop studied my sweater and suggested some creative sewing to tie up the unraveling strings. What would you know? It worked!

No more gaps or holes! I was so pleased with the shop and customer service that I even bought some wool wash for my sweater project.

Here is a close up shot of the arm. There are still a few places that are stretched and a little holey but much better than when I started! (Sorry, forgot a before pic!)

The whole process took less than fifteen minutes and saved a sweater! Pretty darn proud of myself 🙂

Happy Knitting!

Sunday Is For Beef

Today has been a very lazy day. The husband and I did a little shopping, a little cleaning, and a little (lot) football watching.

But the best part was cooking up some of the home grown Kansas grain fed beef that we picked up from the processor this past Friday! We selected a nice marbled price of sirloin steak….

(Feel free to drool! It turned out a perfect medium to medium rare!!)

We paired our meat selection with some home grown frozen sweet corn, crescent rolls with homemade jam, steamed rice, and black beans.

I selected a nice white table wine in lemon-lime flavor from my friends at Prairie Fire Winery. It tasted like a really delicate margarita! Bob and Julie are two of the most talented people I had the pleasure of meeting during my MBA program. Feel free to check out their winery and tell them I sent you!

Yours truly (seated in the green tee) helped plant almost 600 vines earlier this spring. It was awesome, however my back hurt for a week!!

In honor if Sunday Night Football I have some Beer n Cheese Bread in the machine. Stay tuned tomorrow to find out how it turns out! I am also on my 7th scarf for the weekend. They are great tv knitting but I’m ready for something else, lol.

Happy Knitting!!

Grumpapatimas

I was a major grumpapatimas yesterday…(learned that term from Archie, Jo’s son in The Beach Street Knitting and Yarn Society)

The weather was gloomy and turned quite cold all of a sudden. My reports at work weren’t balancing and I had a stiff neck from hunching over them. My schedule has been brutal lately and I’m just overwhelmed and exhausted.

I decided i was tired of being grumpy, so I decided to do something about it! First, I called my Grandma Genevieve as soon as I got home from work. She is an amazing woman and such a big part of my life that a thousand blog posts couldn’t even begin to cover my feelings about her! She listens to my troubles, applauds my accomplishments, and loves me for who I am.

(This was 10 years ago when I graduated and she is still just as gorgeous!)

After 45 minutes on the phone with her I could start to feel the grump fall off. Next, I wrapped myself in something hand knit! I splurged on some expensive alpaca yarn last year and knit myself a Honey Cowl by Madelintosh. Nothing soothes the soul like luxurious soft hand knits on a cold gloomy day. I mean that’s why we all knit right? This pattern was easy yet interesting and really fun to make.

After wrapping up to ward off the chill, I packed up the pooches and headed off to the park for some frisbee with my beloved!

After a few good chucks of the disc both the hubby and I felt a lot better! And we wore out our energizer bunny of a lab.

I guess the morale of my story is that no bad day can withstand the power of family, good knitting, and puppy love. Seriously, how can you be grumpy around this face?

A Very Special Labor Day Weekend

I grew up with the most amazing dad in the world. He is smart, compassionate, patient, and a great teacher. He has been a teacher since 1980 and a football coach since 1981 and all at one school. Hundreds of students and athletes have passed through his classroom and football field. There have been ups and downs, ahem, including my teenage years but he handled it all with class and patience.
I got a email a few months back that the football alumni and school board wanted to honor his 30 years of service and invited our family to help surprise him at the first home game of the season. So my mother, sister, the hubs, and I sneakily made plans to all attend the game. There were also 52 alumni football players in attendance and we were off to the races! The football team was led down the field by a group of Harley’s and got the crowd really fired up. Then each team took there warmups. Finally we got to the surprise, my family met the alumni at midfield and shocked the hell out of my dad. A heartfelt speak was written and read by my dad’s assistant coach of 28 years. Then the big reveal….
The school board named the field after him! Pike Valley football field is now Don Melby Field!

Dad was shocked to the point of tears. Such an amazing gift from a supportive community. I’d like to take a moment to explain why this is do special. Not only has father lived and taught in this community for 30 years, he also grew up there. He attended high school and won three back to back to back state football championships. He built a home right across the street from the field with his wife and raised two daughters here. So now every morning he can step onto the porch and see that sign. A testament to his hard work and dedication.
I cannot thank the players, families, boosters, and the community enough for this honor. It means the world to my dad and our family. Such a rare thing in this world today and it must be celebrated!

Happy Labor Day!!

Introducing Dex

Today I’d like you to meet Dex. He’s a 3 yr old yellow lab with serious toy issues. Not long after my husband and I got married he started talking about getting a big dog, insert Dex. He was the last of a litter and just the sweetest baby ever. We couldn’t ask for a better dog.

He spends many an hour at my side and all he asks for in return is some kibble and a few throws if his favorite toy, the frisbee. We got him his own frisbee golf disc and he chases it to hell and back. When I get home from work he greets me every day with disc in mouth. And weather permitting we exercise every day, great for both owner and dog! He also collects squeaky toys, he’s the only dog I have ever had that doesn’t destroy them. He hoards them from Chloe in his kennel!

He may be my husband’s dog, but he’s my baby. He climbs onto our bed every night when i go to ged and guards me until my husband comes to bed. I swear sometimes he thinks he’s people!

I know this isn’t a knitting post but I hope you enjoy!

Ps…sorry he is pouting in the photo. We didn’t make it to the park for frisbee today and he’s pissed, lol.

Meet Chloe

I’d like you to meet Chloe! She is a 4 year old Cavalier Spaniel who snores like a grizzly bear and wants to be friends with everyone she meets. She is my sometimes knitting companion when she isn’t too hot to sit next to me. I believe she gets jealous of my knitting because it doesn’t always leave room in my lap for her!
My husband and I rescued her from a very nice lady who succumbed to cancer. She can be stubborn and naughty but we have never regretted a minute of it. She can cure my foulest of moods with a simple snuggle and quick kiss. She waits for me everyday in our bay window when I get off work.
So here she is and she is pleased to meet you. Chloe will most definitely be part of my future knitting adventures!
