Knitting with Jellybean

Every once in awhile Jellybean shows some fleeting interest in my knitting. Mostly he wants to know if the project is for him or if he can play with it. I have been very firm but gentle in talking about that we don’t touch other people’s knitting. Jellybean is very keen to turn my ball winder as well which I let him help me do from time to time. He also very much enjoys unwinding small balls of yarn. He calls this process “his knitting” I always have little bits and bobs laying around so I decided to make him his own knitting.

I pulled out a project bag with knitting skulls on it and he was delighted. I then included some heavy fingering and sport weight little balls of yarn. He was DELIGHTED to have his own bag and his own yarn.  I can’t tell you how many times I rewound his “knitting” for him but I’m pretty sure we played for a solid 40 minutes.

I just love that he enjoys spending time with me doing crafty things!

Tomato Madness

This weekend my husband took Jellybean all by himself to the Kansas State Fair and to see his side of the family. You guys….just between you, me, and the blog….I haven’t had a weekend alone in my own house for THREE YEARS. Since before Jellybean was born, for real.  I’ll let that sink in….and with the recent sleep jihad by Jellybean (we have been to a doctor and we all agree that he’s having legitimate allergy/sinus/bloody nose pain and issues….my baby has to have very minor surgery and it breaks my heart but it will help him and Lord knows we ALL need to sleep better)

But I digress, I had almost the whole weekend! Jellybean got me up multiple times between 4 and 7 am the night before so I decided to be industrious after they hit the road. I pulled seven or eight gallon bags of tomatoes frozen from our summer garden and started simmering tomato sauce. This is most the ingenious thing my grandma taught me. Since my tomatoes didn’t set enough at one time to make batches of sauce we freeze them in bags after being washed and de-stemmed. When you pull them out and dunk them in warm water the skins slough right off and the flesh can go right into the cook pot. There is no blanching or peeling….its amaze-balls!

It was hot and messy but in the end I made 3 1/2 pints of super hot jalapeno salsa for the hubby. And then 12 pints of plain tomato sauce for cooking. I’m sooo happy to be filling my pantry with these goodies for a fresh pick me up mid-winter!

I did a fair bit of knitting as well while the sauce was simmering. I’ll show you that later this week….stay tuned!

Playground Knitting

Jellybean is currently in a…..lets just call it sleep rebellion. And only mommy is allowed to “help” him. So pardon me while I down my second coffee because I’ve been up since 4 am.

We have been spending a lot of time in parks to help him run off his toddler wiggles. And I’ve taken my knitting! God bless Erin Lane bags and their handy snap feature….


I had my Vacation Vanilla Socks clipped right to my belt loop and knit while Jellybean performed play yard acrobatics that made me cringe and smile. I guess this way we both have a little creative time!

Garden Goodies

My husband and I have been taking turns in the garden this summer. Okay, to be fair he’s done most of the work because Jellybean has been in a “mommy only” phase that has absorbed most of my time. But this morning I snuck out before Jellybean woke up and picked these beauties.

We planted basil, tomatoes, jalapenos, green bell pepper, cherry tomatoes and onions. All but the onions are thriving! I believe we will either have BLTs or fresh chunky garden salsa for supper tonight!

Family Reunions and Knitting

Hurrah! I come triumphant and exhausted from a family reunion. There were lots of hugs and lots of knitting! My Dad’s socks are almost done!


I turned the heel and started up the leg! I know for sure I didn’t count extremely well while conversating because I had to fudge the final couple of rounds of the heel turn before continuing in the round. Shhh….no one will tell!

For now I’m now I’m going to attempt to dig out of the major sleep deprivation of a long wonderful weekend…

Time Out

I’m going to be taking a small break from posting for a couple of weeks. Later today I’m going to have my tonsils removed at 31 years old. I’ve just had too many health issues over the last year to continue to ignore the problem. This procedure is simple and easy but the recovery is rough for adults.

I’m still going to be knitting and I have a few scheduled blog posts coming up. But I think I’m going to take a time out from posting lest you get pain med induced nonsense. Entertaining as that might be I think I’ll save you from my misery. 

I’ve got several easy garter and vanilla sock projects lined for bed knitting (if I even feel like it). I have my Mighty Rainbow Blanket and my Rainbow Bright Vanilla socks all ready to go. I may have also cast on my Bali Vanilla socks just in case I run out of easy knitting, you never know!

Setbacks

I’ve been thinking about how to write this post. Ultimately I decided to let it flow as it comes. I have been struggling with my health for awhile mostly related to my tonsils. I finally made the tough decision to have the very painful tonsillectomy. I thought that was tough. But you guys, literally two days after booking everything I got freaking mono!

There were lots of tears and rescheduling of plans. Mono is not terminal but gosh does it not lend itself to having a toddler who prefers his mommy. I’m sad I can’t get my tonsils fixed but I’m crushed that I can’t be there 100% for my baby. So for know I’m putting my health first. Basically this means lots of rest and fluids. Exercise will take a back burner. I’m hoping to have a flexible work schedule so I can deal with my fatigue. Have I mentioned this sucks?

And then my kid got hand foot mouth….so of course I got it too!


It’s super painful and I can barely hold on to a cup let alone needles. As for knitting….I don’t know what this means. I may not have as much content as I would like. But I promise not to disappear. Any positive vibes sure would be appreciated!

Crafting Heritage

My Grandma Leta passed away almost three years ago. And as it happens we are still going through boxes and memories. I got a little treat from my Aunt on a recent visit…


All my Grandma’s crochet hooks all neatly contained in her satin needle organizer. I’m not much of a crochet person but I like knowing I have a piece of grandma in my craft bag.

But the really cool piece is this…


This is a hand carved wooden crochet hook that belonged to my Great Grandma Ola. Best guess this is somewhere around 60-70 years old. It’s well worn and smooth. My aunt thinks my Grandpa or Great-Grandpa made this for Ola. How cool is that? I’m thinking of mounting this in a small shadow box to hang in my craft room.
