Yarn Chicken Fail

My Baby Vertebrae for PB officially has two sleeves!

I can’t help but keep thinking the speckles of this yarn paired with this pattern are just so sharp looking! And the fabric has quite the soft hand to it even before washing. It’s 100% merino and a nice plump 4-ply DK. I just love it so hard. I have forbade the husband from even THINKING about washing this in fear of felting it. I might even make a dark red HAND WASH ONLY tag and affix to the inside, lol.

I’m very clearly ready for button bands. But guess what guys…I lost at yarn chicken….

All I have left is this TINY ball of yarn and an entire button band to knit on. I broke down and ordered another skein from Apothefaery Fibers in her Etsy shop in this same color. I know the skeins won’t likely match. But I only have the button band left and I’m okay if that color difference shows. I can totally spin that as intentional! Now I just have to sit and wait for the mailman to bring me my pretty!

The Best Laid Plans

PB’s due date is marching ever closer. I had grand plans to knit this baby girl a little trousseau to herald her entrance into this world. But guess what….I’m a working mom with an active 3 year old who stubbornly refuses to sleep consistently or potty train and a husband who is well…..a typical husband. I’m quite frankly going to be lucky to finish her Baby Vertebrae, a hospital hat, and maybe one other thing.

One item that is important to me is a tutu. I know we will take newborn photos of her and I really want yarn to be involved a little bit for this one. I was too in the weeds of new motherhood with Jellybean to have this thought. So I am going to make up at least one if not two Lexi’s Knitted Tutu by Ashlee Lackovic. I have literally made this pattern 20 times already so I know it’s a good one.

I’m thinking a bright rainbow one and a more subtle gold/brown one. I pulled the yarn from stash already. Now I just need needles, project bag and the mojo to crank these out before PB’s arrival, lol! Wish me luck!

One Sleeve Down

One project that needs to see more love is the Baby Vertebrae for PB.

I’ve finished the first sleeve and put the needles in for the second sleeve. After this it will literally only need a button band and blocking. I think my mental block on this one is the DPNs. They are not my jam. I have to pay special attention to my tension when changing needles to avoid laddering. (This is totally why I knit my socks on 9 inch circs.) I really want this sweater for PB and it should be just right for fall. And the yarn is divine….I am just struggling with my mojo a little bit.

Oh well, slow and stead will still win the race right?

He or She….What Will PB Be?

I am (mostly) happily chugging along through week 25 of pregnancy with PB. (PB standing for Picky Baby because of the large volume of food returned to sender). We have had a very clear anatomy scan at 20 weeks and Jellybean hosted a Valentines Themed gender reveal.

Lots of food was consumed and a good time was had by all. So, you must be wondering what is PB…..

Well PB is a she!

So the gender score will be even in our house! Jellybean seems as excited as any 3 year old can possibly be given that he doesn’t really understand how much his world is changing!

Now I just need to get my mojo flowing and crank out some girl knits!

WIP Wednesday: Baby Vertebrae

My Baby Vertebrae is crawling along! This is yarn from Winter Woolfest 2018 from Apothefairy Fibers. The speckles are just divine!!

I’m making the 12-18 months size in DK yarn. Babies in my family run big so I thought I’d err on the side of caution. Only one and a half sleeves and a button band to go! I am finding the fabric very pleasing and I often stop to pet the fabric 🙂

WIP Wednesday: Baby Sophisticate #8

My latest Baby Sophisticate is cruising right along. I through the raglan increases and divided for the sleeves. (please ignore the dog hair…)

I really like the color but I can say this yarn can be a little splitty. It’s Cascade Heritage Cherub Aran in navy. It’s very soft from the acrylic content and should be easy care for the new mom and tiny treasure. So I can think I can deal. The baby shower is set for April 30th so now I have a deadline! Should be easy as pie…famous last words.

Cast On: Another Baby Sophisticate

A dear friend from literally pre-school is having a little baby boy. She and her husband worked and prayed very hard for this miracle. So I want to make something extra special. I’ve already knit a blanket.

Now the little mister needs a sweater! I am going with an old standby…the Baby Sophisticate by Linden Down. I pulled some Cascade Yarns Cherub Aran in a navy colorway from my stash. I bought this for a Jellybean sweater but he quickly outgrew this yardage before I could get knitting.

Ravelry tells me that this is the 8th such sweater I have knit. Nothing wrong with a great classic! Do you have any repeatable patterns?

 

FO Friday: Crochet Rainbow Baby Blanket

Oooof, crochet is hard for me. While I like it as a break from knitting and give my hands and arms a different workout….it’s just not intuitive to me. Nevertheless my Rainbow Baby Blanket is done!


Camera angles hide a multitude of sins. I’m still working on not losing stitches as I turn and crochet. But this bulky chenille yarn doesn’t help. It’s a perfectly serviceable blanket just not so much rectangular like it should be. Given that it’s main job will be warmth and the absorption of baby bodily fluids I don’t know I am bothered so much.


The finished size is roughly 34×40 inches. I used three skeins of Bernat Blanket and size K hook. All it needs now is a bath in baby safe soap and tucked safely away for the wee one to be born!

FO Friday: Crochet Baby Blanket #2

I talked on Monday about my first (test) crochet blanket and how I started the second one. Guess what it’s done!

  

I chained fewer stitches on this one to make a longer blanket than the first and then worked the same half double crochet stitch. I was able to keep my edges straighter and my tension is much more even. I kept working until I  hit my totally length. But I still had a ton of yarn left so I added a single crochet border to even it out and use every bit of the yarn.

This was CRAZY fast I finished this one in a total of two sittings or roughly 5 hours. I definitely picked up steam from the first one. I don’t think I’m going to become a crazy crochet junkie but this is a nice skill to have to knock out a quick baby present. This blanket is going into the gift pile for a future tiny human.

I might be ready to start my mom’s blanket….maybe. The only caveat is that I think I’ll pick a variegated yarn that will cover a multitude of sins that is my beginning crochet, lol.

Working Out The Kinks

I finished my crochet baby blanket! I definitely had a few kinks in the process. I feel fairly clumsy with the hook still.

  
This is definitely a test piece! I had trouble controlling my tension and losing stitches at the end of my rows. Look how wonky this sides are! But I did get the hang of the half double crochet stitch and where to place my hook. This finished blanket turned out to be 21 inches by 27 inches so that’s not bad for baby sized. I’m still not ready to start a huge blanket and I had another single skein of this Bernat Baby blanket in my stash so I started a second one.

  
Upside is that this one is more even and the stiches are easier to see in the blue color. And boy howdy is this faster than knitting. I finished my white blanket in four sittings or roughly 8 hours! I don’t think I’ll end up being a huge crochet fiend but it is a great way to knock out a quick baby knit!
