Wishing Knitting: A Good Hat Yarn

I have been having a hard time getting a skein of yarn from my stash out of my head these days. I picked up some Lemonade Shop yarn earlier this year. It’s an amazing grey and rainbow combination. It’s delicious……

I want a nice plain project that will really let this yarn shine. I’m thinking about the Sockhead Slouch by Kelly McClure. The trick will be to get the gauge just right so the yarn doesn’t flash or pool and lets the rainbow blips show up like I want. That might mean a couple starts and frogs. I’m not sure how I feel about that….

Does anyone else have any vanilla hats they like for fingering weight yarn?

FO Friday: Jay Jay Shawl

I have another lighting quick finish. I think garter stitch one/two skein projects are just my jam right now. Here is the Jay Jay shawl in all her glory!

Pattern: Jay Jay by Francesca Caricato

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Sunseeker in Silver

Needle: US 6

Mods: To maximize yarn in the last section I omitted two garter ridges and added one extra eyelet row. This made it so that I had just a few yards of  yarn left.

This pattern was intuitive and addictive. It made great car knitting too! The yarn I wasn’t so in love with. It’s a DK weight yarn made of cotton, acrylic and metallic thread. It’s very pretty but not very soft or warm. I bought this back in 2013 in a yarn shop because it was pretty and I didn’t know any better at that level of my knitting. This yarn was knit and frogged out of two other shawls before it became Jay Jay. In the end I’m happy with it and very happy it’s out of my stash.

I think this will be a gift for my mother in law. She will appreciate the beauty and in her “season of life” like the fact that it’s not overly warm. Well and with cotton and acrylic I know she won’t felt or shrink it, lol.

Happy Knitting!!

Cast On: Jay Jay Shawl

After finishing Reyna I knew I needed another shawl on the needles. I pawed through my bag of prepped projects and pulled out the Jay Jay Shawl by Francesca Caricato. This is a DK weight shawl with garter and eyelets. My yarn was wound, pattern printed and needles ready to go so I cast on.

Jellybean had a doctors appointment and his flu shot which resulted in a very tired and grumpy three year old. He puppy dog eyed me and convinced me to stay home and snuggle him instead of going to daycare/work. And I managed to get a good chunk of the shawl started!

It’s crescent shaped and gorgeous. The yarn is some REALLY old stash that is Cascade Yarns Sunseeker. It’s grey with a fine thread of sparkle running though. It’s not the softest yarn but oh is it pretty!! I’ve got to two skeins and and I plan to use as much as possible. This might be my next obsession!

Happy Knitting!!

Cast On: Rainy Avenue

I recently stumbled across some caked up goodies in my stash, Cascade Yarns Sunseeker in a sparkle grey color. I bought this many moons ago and tried to start a very complicated shawl. I got frustrated and frogged it.

But now that my skills have grown a bit this yummy yarn deserves to be knit. I chose Rainy Avenue by Jeannie Kubricht. The pattern calls for a variegated contrast color but I think I’ll be a little more vanilla and just use one color throughout.

I pulled a project bag together and started the garter tab cast on. I have a few other WIPS I’d like to finish up before starting this. But it’s nice to know this project is ready and waiting for me when I’m ready to start working!

Happy Knitting!

FO Friday: Old Man of Storr Shawlette

Drum roll…my Old Man of Storr is done!

I’m soooo happy!

I used this pattern and I used Treasure Goddess Yarn in Super Toes Cashmere base in the Pieces of Eight color. It used up 510 yards of yarn or roughly 127 grams. And I knit using a size 4 needle.

It’s 60 inches across and 28 inches deep. The lace isn’t perfect but for my first attempt I’m overjoyed! And to top it all off it was my 2016 Mother’s Day cast on, so I’ll always have that cozy memory when I wrap up in this!

I even managed to turn this in for WIP points in the Down Cellar Studio Pigskin Party KAL! Insert happy dance here….

Happy Knitting!!

Lace and Lifelines

I’ve made some progress since I left off on Monday with my Old Man of Storr. It has one full lace repeat and the start of a second.

I’ve moved my lifeline after the first (mostly) successful repeat. I did do some more tinking and my first lace row is perhaps a bit wonky. I decided only I could tell and I was happy enough to move on. And obviously lace looks like scrunched up rubbish until you block it.

I’m getting better at “reading” my lace and can tell when I get off pattern. It usually takes 20 stitches away from the error but I catch on eventually. This pattern is a great lace warm up, at least in my opinion. We will see if I still agree as the rows get longer and longer!

Happy Knitting!!

WIP Resurrection

Look what I found in the WIP bin in the basement…

I pulled my Mother’s Day cast on project from hibernation. This is the Old Man Of Storr shawlette. I’m still in the garter section trying to get to 52 garter ridges. I’m around 38 last I counted. The yarn is heavenly to touch and the garter is soothing. But as is the case with most center out shawls….the rows are getting longer and longer. This shall be a test of my patience!

Happy Knitting!!

FO Friday: Flying North Socks

I’m chalking up some more points for the 2015 Pigskin Party KAL! The   Flying North Socks are done! I actually managed to squeak this in on December 31st for my final project of 2015.

I’m rubbish at photographing these. The dark neutral color is hard to capture and it’s just too close to my carpet, lol. But trust me it’s very lovely in person!

Pattern: Flying North Sock by Maria Montzka

Yarn: Plucky Feet in Medieval (Won in the 2014 #sockswithsarah KAL)

Needles: US 1s

Size: 70 stitches total

Mods: none

These are just so squishy and amazing. Their is subtle color variation in the yarn. The points that line up make my OCD heart sing. I cannot wait to wear these! And now I need to start another pair of socks while the needles are still warm!!

Happy Knitting

WIP Wednesday: Flying North Socks

My Flying North Socks have plugged right along. Sock number one is complete!

These have been very soothing knitting for my sad heart of late. I’m almost done with sock number two.

I’ve just the ribbed cuff and afterthought heel left to complete. So just a couple of evenings and these will be done! Then I can bank more points for the 2015 Pigskin Party with Down Cellar studio.

The yarn isn’t the softest but is making a nice sturdy fabric. I’m hoping these make hard wearing socks! Also I’ve done a 60% afterthought heel instead of 50% and I think that is providing a better fit. Final judgment on that to come later…

Happy Knitting!

FO Friday: Gru’s Scarf

I made it! This one has been done for a few days I just haven’t gotten around to blogging it.

That my friends is a LOT of freaking yarn….

Pattern: My own improvised pattern. Rav notes are here.

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Grey Heather and Black. I used 715 yards of yarn or 385 grams, or roughly 2 full skeins (half of black and one and a half grey)

Needles: US 8 16″ circular

Now hopefully I can grab some photos this weekend of this yarn combined with the rest of the family costumes. We are all going as Despicable Me themed outfits 🙂

Happy Knitting.
