The Power of Knitters

I am in need some help.  A dear friend has a beautiful boy who will have a bone anchored hearing device implanted by this fall. He’s an active farm kid that doesn’t let anything slow him down. But as a momma she wants to keep him warm and snuggly as he’s tending cows with dad. She sent me this website and asked if I could help knit a hat for them.

Ponto Hat

It’s an adult pattern with rough directions from a medical website. I could make it work but I feel like this kid who has overcame so much already deserves better! I’m calling on the collective good hearts of knitters to help me find a better/more fun pattern. I spent a long time rolling around Ravelry but didn’t locate any patterns. Perhaps I’m just not entering the right search terms? So have any of you out there come across a pattern for a knit hat that accommodates a hearing device?

FO Friday: Minion Hat

Grandma to the rescue! Thanks to her crochet skills Jellybean’s Minion Hat is done!! She sent me the minion eyes…

I still need to do some more tacking of the eyes to both secure them for baby hands and make them lay attractively.

The eyes are a little high and kind of googley are adorable nonetheless

I don’t have the stats on the total yarn used but it was a great stashbuster of leftover bits. It’s Caron Simply Soft in Sunshine, Black, Cobalt Blue, and White. My ravelry page is here.

Now I just need to figure out how to get Jellybean to model this and keep it on his head for more than 30 seconds. I think I have secured the necessary overalls for his Halloween costume but I still need to find a yellow shirt. Not to mention get my but in gear on the Gru scarf! It’s less than two months to Halloween!

Happy Knitting!

FO Friday: Dino Hat

I’m just a little bit giddy over this hat. I may have squeed a bit after weaving in ends! The Dino Cap for Jellybean is done and ready for winter.

The spikes turned out a but fussy. I couldn’t get the look I wanted so I just said forget it and went with the pattern directions for construction. I just really wanted this to be finished. That being said I did detour from the pattern instructions when I went to attach them. I didn’t want a lot of bulk at back of the skull because Jellybean will have to wear this in the car seat. So I scrunched up my spikes on the forehead  and left the back flat. I think it’s adorable and functional! And how warm does that double thick brim with ear flaps look?!
Pattern: Dino Cap by Kris Hansen

Size: 2 year old

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Green and Brown (I used roughly 180 yards between the two colors)

Needles: US 6s and US 7s

Mods: See above for spikes   My notes and project are raveled here for any additional details.

I hope you have a Happy Friday and Happy Knitting!!

All But The Spikes!

As hoped I managed to finish the hat portion! It’s looking a bit big even for growing boy. But jellybean is not in the mood to try this one so I’m not sure yet.

I even started one of the spikes!

I’m not sure if it’s my execution or the pattern but it looks a bit messy to me. I think I’m going to play around with the next couple of spikes to find what I like. The pattern I’m using is this one. I’d like a smoother edge so I’m going to slip the edge stitches to see what kind of holes/edge that makes.

Happy Knitting!

A Dinosaur For Jellybean

I had to put this hat into time out after my Dino-Uh Oh a few weeks ago.

But I’ve picked it back up and it’s FLYING! During nap time and daddy time I was able to knit the brim correctly including the ear flaps this past weekend. And then I worked the hat to where I need to start the crown decreases.

I’m hoping to get the hat portion done this week. Maybe I can start the Dino spikes over the weekend? But with a wee one that might just be wishful thinking…

One thing I know for sure is that this hat will be warm and soft! Now I just need to teach him how to leave on our hat!

Happy Knitting!

A Growing Minion

Thanks to some 4th of July grandparents time I’ve made some progress on my mini minion hat!

I’ve completed the goggle band and ready to start the crown decreases. Unfortunately I’m out of the sunshine yellow (insert face palm here). I’ve been to two Walmarts and a Joanns so far with no dice. Apparently neon yellow is in and sunshine is out. My last hope is Michaels so fingers crossed!

I also attempted to make eyes for the minion using YouTube tutorials. Let’s just say I need more practice. My mom saw my attempts, giggled and then promised to make them for me. So I left the yarn in her hot little hands!

Happy knitting!!

FO Friday: Double Rib Toddler Hat

Tah Dah! My second FO is done from my cast on-itis!!

Pattern: Double Rib Toddler Hat by Torunn Espe

Size: 1-2 years

Yarn: Berroco Comfort DK in Blue and Menthe

Needles: US 4 circular

Mods: omitted the I-cord on the ear flaps

This hat just fits my 9 month old. He does have a head in the 90th percentile but it’s not ginormous.  The ear flaps cover nicely. But I wish it was a bit bigger. Here’s hoping it fits in the fall! I think I’m going to knit another with the colors flipped as I have enough yarn leftover. My jogless stripes could use some practice anyway

Below is pretty much a summary of how the photo shoot went. It’s a unique challenge to get a baby to both wear the garment and sit still. But at least I think he likes it?

Minions!!!

Another hat for Jellybean!

I’m improvising this hat as I go. I cast on 100 stitches on US 4s with a long tail cast on. I will work some ribbing then switch to stockinette. I will need to work in a black a black stripe for the goggle band. As for the eyes I’m going to have to ask my mother for some help. Crochet in the round is something I’ve yet to grasp.

I’m also toying with idea of adding hair to the top? I really want jellybean to be some form of a minion for Halloween. My husband would make a wonderful Gru and I could maybe aim for Agnes? It wouldn’t take a lot of sewing just some thrift store diving. I just wish I had the bandwidth to knit Gru’s scarf for the hubby, lol. I’ll have to think about that one….

Happy Knitting

Dino-Uh Oh

I shouldn’t knit after 9 pm…

I read the instructions several times but my Swiss cheese brain couldn’t grasp this pattern. I did a long tail cast on and went straight into the ear flaps instructions for my Dino Hat. I was working late into the evening, big mistake. This hat actually has a doubled up ribbed brim that I completely skipped. Doh! So to the frog pond it is. I really want to make this hat so I’m going to cast on again

It’s a good thing I like knitting!

A Cast On Storm

It’s almost July and summer is in full swing. But I can’t help but think towards fall. I really want jellybean to have some hand knits. I have the itch for a couple of hats and at least one sweater. I also have at least two baby showers coming up. This has led to a bout of start-itis this past weekend.

I cast on a Knit Tutu from Smashlee. It’s a pink number for a baby girl due I’m September.

Next up is a Dino Cap by Kris Hanson jellybean. I’m knitting the two year old size in some Caron Simply Soft from my stash in hunter green and chocolate brown. I’ve already messed up the pattern but I’m soldiering on.

Last up is Double Rib Toddler hat by Torunn Espe. I pulled some Berroco Comfort DK Solids from my stash in blue and minty blue-ish?

Now I have more projects than I have hands and time. So this should end well, lol!

Happy Knitting!
