The Power of Knitters

I am in need some help. A dear friend has a beautiful boy who will have a bone anchored hearing device implanted by this fall. He’s an active farm kid that doesn’t let anything slow him down. But as a momma she wants to keep him warm and snuggly as he’s tending cows with dad. She sent me this website and asked if I could help knit a hat for them.

It’s an adult pattern with rough directions from a medical website. I could make it work but I feel like this kid who has overcame so much already deserves better! I’m calling on the collective good hearts of knitters to help me find a better/more fun pattern. I spent a long time rolling around Ravelry but didn’t locate any patterns. Perhaps I’m just not entering the right search terms? So have any of you out there come across a pattern for a knit hat that accommodates a hearing device?

What Did I Get Myself Into

The yarn for my Aeon Vest is here! Now I’m being a good girl. I’ve knit a swatch…

I haven’t blocked it yet. But I did use the recommended size 6 needles and the fabric is very loose. I haven’t compared this to pattern guage because it’s not blocked and I’m not sure I like how this fabric feels. I want this vest not to grow when worn or be too loosey goosey.

Now before I did this swatch I had taken my measurements to find the appropriate pattern size. I then went about marking up the pattern after reading carefully. I like to white out all the directions that don’t apply to me and make notes/highlights to help me along the way. Now I’m not sure the size I marked is the one I’ll end up knitting based on my desired fabric guage…knitting fail.

Having done all that, I can’t help but think….what the hell did I get myself into!? This pattern is knit in one piece and has detailed directions. But it’s my first foray into a moderately shaped piece with lots of *at the same time*. I may well lose what little brains I have left. But I know I will need to color coded the snot out of this to reduce my chance of screwing up.

A Recipe For My Husband’s Socks

Recently my hubby asked for hand knit socks. This is the FIRST time he’s ever requested or even indicated he’d wear a hand knit. So of course I’m happy to comply. Well he’s a size 12 US shoe so I might be less happy when I’m knitting forever!

I used my Very Berry Vanilla Socks as a gauge swatch and measured the aforementioned giant feet. That’s a lot of stockinette so I decided a simple ribbed sock was in order. Not to mention it would give the fabric a little leeway with the stretch. Here’s the “recipe” I came up with:

Husband Ribbed Socks

CO 24 stitches (I prefer the figure 8 method)
Knit one round
K1, incr 1, knit to last two stitches on needle, incr1, k1. Repeat for second needle
Repeat these two rows until I’ve got 80 stitches total.
Work in K3,P1 pattern for 9 inches (from cast on edge).
Insert lifeline for some sort of afterthought heel across 40 stitches.
Continue to work in K3,P1 pattern until 2 inches short of total sock.
Work in K1,P1 or K2,P2 for cuff for 2 inches.
Decide on and Insert heel.

Sounds good right? Fingers crossed it works! And I’ve got the yarn narrowed down to some kind of Opal or Knit Picks Stroll. Oh the choices!

(Ps. I’m blogging this “recipe” more as a helper/reminder to myself and not so much as a published pattern. Be warned this has not been tested so knitter beware if you attempt it!)

FO: Meredith’s Cowl

After many trials and tribulations, I have a FO! And I’m very proud.

Mere’s present is finished. The two skeins of Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton in Berry Jam really fulfilled my wine inspiration. This unique cowl is worked in alternating bands of seed stitch and then YO lace work. It is worked in the round on 16″ circulars US size 8. It was a tight fit on the needles but I made it work. Thanks to my husband for tromping through two feet of snow to take pictures of this for me!!!

Meredith’s Cowl

Materials

– Lion Brand Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton – 2 skeins Berry Jam (approx 3.00 oz or 103 yds)

– US size 8 circular needle (16” or longer)

– Stitch marker

– Tapestry needle

Cowl

CO 150 sts using loop cast on method, careful not to twist. Place marker

1: Join in the round, and Knit to marker. (set up row)

Seed Stitch Section

2: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end

3: *P1, K1, repeat form * to end

4: Work row 2

Lace Section

5: *YO, K2tog, repeat from * to end

6: Knit

7: *K2tog, YO, repeat from * to end

8: Knit

9: *YO, K2tog, repeat from * to end

10: Knit

11: *K2tog, YO, repeat from * to end

Repeat rows 2 through 11 twice more.

Cast off LOOSELY in purl.

Weave in ends.

Resulting cowl is 48” long approximately 6” wide.

Free Dishcloth Pattern

Hello, my name is Rachelle and I am a knitter who needs instant gratification.

I absolutely love the feeling of finishing a project. I a list maker who enjoys crossing off completed tasks. Therefore I have always gravitated to short one or two skein projects. And I almost always have several items in the works. I am NOT a monogamous knitter, lol.

Currently in my needles I have:
1. Stockinette shrug
2. Bulky boot toppers and skinny scarf set
3. Berry Basket Dishcloth
4. One Row baby blanket
5. Hanging kitchen towel
6. Sashay ruffle scarf
I prefer to work on a project that speaks to me at that moment. Depending on my mood that may be any of the above! I know, I know I will never break any knitting speed records this way, but it makes me happy. And isn’t that what knitting all about?

So I would like to share a dishcloth pattern I wrote this year! It’s a simple garter stitch that’s worked corner to corner with an eyelet/lace border. You can find the free Ravelry download here! I love love love working this pattern with Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton. It yields a deliciously soft cloth that’s very durable. I think it’s perfect for new baby washcloths or a face wash cloth because it is so soft and smooth.

I can whip out two or three of these babies in an evening of TV watching! They make great gift for the upcoming holidays. Enjoy this pattern and I’d love to see your finished works on Ravelry if you get a chance! Here are a couple shots of my finished works 🙂
