Cast On: Chiefs Hat #5

This weekend is all about the cast-on-itis and I used football game watching to start another hat brim. I managed to get the full brim knit over two games and get everything turned/connected.

I picked up a skein of Malabrigo Rios at the Studio in the colorway Sunset. I thought this gold/orange color would make a great compliment to my Chiefs Hat #4 colors. I have that one finished and will show you tomorrow all the glamour shots. I started with the Pearl Ten grey for the lining and then moved into the Sunset. I am just now adding the red/Sealing Wax color.

I am not sure how Chiefs-y this will turn out but I am too far to turn back. This will end up a functional hat no matter the colors. OH and I did make the brim wide enough to be able to have a decal added.

Cast On: Chiefs Hat #4

I am still working my projects for 2024 Pigskin Party KAL points so here is my fourth Chiefs Hat this season.

I decided to start with the Malabrigo Rios I recently stashed in the “non-traditional” colors in my basic beanie recipe. This is my 88 stitch basic beanie recipe. I did make the brim about 5 rows taller so I could fit the embroidery patch on. The ones I have left are pretty tall.

I also chose to have the red keep going after the fold. I like the edge it creates to the hat. And then I moved back to my smaller stripes in the body of the hat. I was disappointed that the grey skein had a knot in it and I had to splice the yarn. You can TOTALLY see my splice. I do plan to put the patch over this to hide it.

Can’t Quit Chiefs Hats

I just can’t quit with the Chiefs hats…..so I bought more themed yarn.

It has been quite hard to find appropriate colors in yarn shops. Understanding that stores can’t stock every color or large footprint yarns. But I think I managed! Above is some Malabrigo Worsted, a singles yarn, in Sauterne and Sealed Wax. I was able to find the “traditional” colors in the yarn base.

My options were more limited in the Rios base. I ended up with a variegated black called Pearl Ten and then a traditional red called Freza. This will be more of an abstract hat but I think it will still work! And I’m super excited to show you all some updates I made to some of my finished hats tomorrow!

Restocking Hat Yarn

With all this hat knitting, I needed to restock my worsted yarn. I stopped by YarnBarn in Lawrence and grabbed three new skeins. All Rios but in English Rose, Hojas, and Medusa.

The Hojas color is already on my needles per yesterday’s post. I tried to grab some colors that were different that what I already had made. And I love that YarnBarn already wound these for me. Worsted doesn’t take that long but it sure makes it easy to start another hat super easily.

Tunic Surgery

I took about two re-run episodes Bones to get two sets of size 4 US needles inserted into my Super Simple Summer Sweater project for its “surgery”.

And then during another re-run of NCIS I got the cuts made and un-raveled back to each set of live stitches. It was a little tricky ripping back due to the helical knitting method. But I managed.

Now I need to muster the alone time and mental preparedness to start Kitchener-ing roughly 300+ stitches. I was smart enough to put light bulb stitch markers on each first stitch so I could correctly re-assemble front and back.

Now I need to meditate before undertaking surgery. Happy Knitting!!

Cast On: Mycroft

I finally carved out time to get my Mycroft on to the needles. This was supposed to be my birthday cast on but after reading the pattern I quickly realized I didn’t have the brain space on my birthday to deal with the short rows.

And I was correct, this was a brain bending cast on and first rows. I had the printed pattern and I had cross out tiny sections of the written directions as I went. That, and I counted ALL THE TIME. And this is only the first short row. I have like so many more to do.

I have put this back in the bag for when I can come up for air and work on this one uninterrupted. Totally invested in this project and it looks to get easier after the short rows….but I gotta get there first, lol.

Ladders….Not The Good Kind

I have continued to pick up my Weekender and knit a few rounds at least a couple times the past week. This is good knitting for movie night with the husband because I only have to pay attention to two spots and they have stitch markers. I am now just beyond four inches done for the body. But once again that little knitter in the back of my brain was jumping up and down trying to get me to notice something…

I am getting pretty significant ladders on the other side of my slip stitch detail. Like I can see my fingers through them when I pull at the work. I am pretty sure this has something to do with my tension and I am working the slipped stitch.

Now the really big question is….how much does this bother me? You can’t really see it when the knit just hangs. But I feel like I could adjust my technique and correct for this. Am I really ready to rip back four inches of sweater body? I think I need to sleep on this one…

 

Weekender Progress

I took my Weekender along with me on holiday travels. It got a fair bit of activity on it before the Arya Shawl took over my brain. I think now I have roughly three to four inches of body knit so far. That is decent progress considering last we spoke about this one I had only just connected the ribbing in the round.

Being as I’m working with Malabrigo, I am alternating skeins using a helical method. It can get kind of tangled and I have to stop every inch or so and untwist my working yarns. But I’m pretty sure that says more about my knitting skills rather than the method. With small humans in my house I have to pick up and put down my projects A LOT.

Everyone once in awhile I flip my project over to look at the “right” side. Thank goodness Andrea Mowry designed this to be worked inside out. This knitter could not purl that many stitches in the round! But I do find myself admiring the slip stitch detail on the front and back.

I do admit that I’m a little concerned that A) this Kansas winter won’t stay cold enough for long enough for me to need a worsted weight sweater and B) I won’t actually finish this till spring at this rate…oh well!

Cast On: The Weekender

Okay, here is my second birthday day cast on. I finally cast on the Malabrigo Rios in the Fresco y Seco color that I wound up in my last winding frenzy. I cast on the Weekender by Drea Renee Knits aka Andrea Mowry.

This sweater had a split hem and the front and back is cast on separately. I started the front hem and you guys….I learned the Tubular Cast On. It did take me a lot longer to slow down and learn this. I watched at least three YouTube videos and painstakingly did the first set-up TWICE.

It’s definitely not perfect but I can see how it makes a nice clean edge that seems to come out of now where. I’m hopeful that my second hem is a little neater. I need to work on keeping my gauge consistent across and slipping the correct stitches.

I’m excited to get this sweater going in the round so I can have a nice zen project that can just work endlessly in circles. Happy Knitting!!

World Wide Knit in Public Day 2019 (And A Little Stash Enhancement)

I decided to participate in World Wide Knit in Public day on June 8th. I passed PB and Jellybean on to my husband and was like “peace out I’m going to the yarn store!” and ran away.  It was a wonderful couple of hours. I managed to sit and knit for a bit in the mall courtyard outside the shop but I neglected to take photos. But I did snag a photo of some sweet ice cream treats the yarn store owner was passing out to knitters.

Well I’m not sure if it was the chocolate high or the yarn fumes wafting out of the yarn store, but they were have a sale and I fell down in the Malabrigo section. I’ve been toying with the idea of knitting a worsted boxy to use a nicer sweatshirt in the fall and winter. Like a socially acceptable blanket I could wear and be comfortable and stylish. Jellybean always likes when I wear green so I bought six skeins of worsted to knit a boxy.

I got the Fresco y Seco color and its wonderfully tonally green and bits of yellow. Now I fully understand I’m going to have to alternate skeins to prevent pooling and lines where I would change skeins. I’m thinking about trying helical knitting that seems to everywhere on the podcast and inter webs here lately.

I have like four projects that I need to finish before I let myself cast this on. So this is almost like Wishful Knitting but here’s hoping it is at least near in the future!
