Cast On: 2020 Advent Socks #3

Now that the Down Cellar Studio’s Pigskin Party KAL is here and going full force I am casting on ALL THE THINGS to earn all the points I can. First up is a pair of socks to live in my purse!

This the LAST of my 2020 BFL advent minis from agirlandherwool. I had already made socks here and here with the rest. These will be my “recipe” of 68 stitch toe up vanilla socks with gusset heels. I obviously haven’t made it that far but that will come in time. I will earn yardage points AND sponsor points for this dyer. I am really trying to use my stash to my advantage and wrack up the points this year.

Cast On: Bifrost Advent

After I ripped out my Wool and Waves advent shawl AND getting my Cloudborn order in, I was ready to cast on my next garter shawl/scarf project. This is the last project I need to “finish all the advent yarn before the new advent yarn comes in the fall”, lol.

I picked the Bifrost pattern by Cater Carter Evans. And I started this project as the pattern instructed for stitch count and stitch pattern. But for one, I didn’t like the garter edging and I wanted a wider project. I did go up several needle sizes to try and make the scarf bigger. I just want more….

So I ripped back the whole darn thing. Which was, if I may say, a nightmare! The soft merino singles stuck to EVERYTHING and ITSELF. I did have to rip one section out and fix it itself. But I managed to get all the yarn back to ball state.

I took some gauge measurements before I ripped, so now I just need a few minutes to run some calculations in excel. I’m going to keep the stitch pattern but work in a slipped stitch edge. And I will cast on more stitches than the pattern….I just needs to do the math to determine how many.

Cast On: All My Stitches

I couldn’t help myself the cast-on-itis was too strong with this one. I had all the minis prepped from my frogged Rainbow Fluff Hibernation Throw so I cast on the All My Stitches!

I am using just a plain white opal sock yarn that I found on Etsy. It should flow nicely as I progress through the rainbow. And I have confession….I have two skeins of the white Opal but I didn’t check yardage to see if it would be enough to last through advent minis. I may end up with yarn chicken on this one!

This cast on did take some brain space, the increase section is a four row repeat. I need to make sure I have time to complete the repeat before setting it down. So this is an “after the kids go to bed” kind of project. I’m anxious to get past the increase so I can just ZOOM in garter or awhile!

The Second Purple Rain Sock

Not one to let my needles get cold…I have cast on for my second Purple Rain Vanilla Sock. I needed to get my easy purse knitting restarted as I am taking a friend to some medical appointments this week.

I really enjoy making socks with my nine inch circular needles. I can’t cast on the toe of course, I do use DPNs (double pointed needles) for those. After I get the last increase round done I move my sock toe to the small circulars.

Because I have the first sock done I will need to pay a little more attention to this project to make sure I mirror what I did on the first one. I didn’t do a great job of taking notes or putting in markers. I was just winging it, lol. Guess I’m paying for that decision now!

Cast On: Catbells Cardigan

I am going to ignore the fact that I have a worsted weight sweater in hibernation because I fell in LOVE with the Catbells Cardigan by Pip and Pin.

A little stash diving lead me to choose my sweater quantity of Briggs and Little Regal in a dark Navy. Its a construction I have not done before. You start with a back piece of lace and build from there.

I have to admit between the simple lace and the dark yarn…..this cast on took me three times to get on the needles. I worked for an hour and I’m only four rows in….

This project needs good light and dedicated brain time. This will be an “after the kids go to bed” project for sure!! Happy Knitting!!

Cast On: 2020 Advent Socks #2

I may have already ordered not one but two yarny advent calendars…..sue me. But it really made motivated to keep working through my agirlandherwool advent calendar from Christmas 2020. I really liked how the first advent/scrappy socks turned out so I am casting on another pair.

I decided not to use the full skein/main color in this pair. I’m just diving right into the minis since they are 20 grams and go really far towards making a sock. I split the mini into two 10 gram balls and I will work each sock concurrently to make sure I keep the colors the same.

Depending on how many minis I use, I might even squeak out a third pair? My main goal is to get all the minis knit up before the other calendars show up in November, wish me luck!

Cast On: Green Worsted Hat

My hat streak continues with the last cake of worsted yarn that I have wound up many moons ago. This hat is going to be eloquently called “Green Worsted Hat” as the yarn doesn’t have a colorway name and I’m not feeling creative, lol.

This is very THICK or heavy worsted yarn so I am creating robust fabric. I think I cast on 80 stitches and I’m working on a US 8 needle. The yarn is disappearing quickly so I should get close to using up the whole skein.

Still don’t have a solid plan for this hat other than my growing collection stowed away in my cedar chest. Maybe a gift? Who knows but I know I am not done knitting hats, lol.

Cast On: Volcano Trail

Summer had me itching for a new project aka new cast on. So Iet myself cast on my Volcano Trail that I had been wishfully knitting.

I am just barely past the cast on, lol. But this first chunk will be a stockinette section folded over and seamed to itself for the top edge. So I am holding the first color double with itself. I am excited for the colors I have picked for this project, they are quite eclectic.

First up is some Shibui Knits Staccato in the Raspberry color and next I will add some Spunky Eclectic Spunky Socks in the Wild Child color. My third color is a mystery skein of greenish sock yarn that I got in a mystery box purchase. And I will round out this project with a skein of Mrs Crosby’s Hat Box in the Pansy colorway.

So if those yarn names mean nothing to you, basically the cowl will move from pinks to greens and back to purple thanks to marling. This project promises minimal purling so that is a bonus for this garter loving girl!

A Second Chaotic Marl

While my needles and project bag were still at hand I did cast on a second Scrappy Marl. I tried to group my tiny scraps into coordinating pairs to use when I hold them double. So far I am not convinced about this project….its reading a bit more “ugly” than “chaotic” to me.

My husband told me to put my OCD brain on hold and wait until I have added all the colors added in. He thinks it will all blend more when I get some other colors added in. He could be right but my sequential and orderly brain just rebels against this, lol.

For sure this hat will go into the gift/donation bin. While I am confident I can make this into a perfectly serviceable hat….I don’t see myself keeping or wearing this one. But I am jazzed about how many tiny balls of scraps are disappearing from my stash!

Cast On: Scrappy Marl Hat

A happy Memorial Day to all those in the US. I am taking advantage of the long weekend to cast on a scrappy project I have been dreaming of for a minute. My Scrappy Marl is on the needles and flying along.

This project holds sock yarn double so it is really chewing through scraps. And yes, I am purposely planning my yarns. I am moving from light to dark in a pseudo rainbow. I’m blending purples and reds right now.

So far I am super pleased. It does feel a little small and tight, but I think blocking will do a world of good on this project. It is a lot of super wash yarn so its going to grow. For my sanity I am spit splicing or Russian joining the ends as I add new colors. No way I want to weave in 100 ends on a scrappy project, lol.
